I usually write to a DVD-RW, transfer it to the Mac and edit it. On
this occasion, I wrote the DVD but the Mac would not open in in DVD
Player. I was able to read it with VLC, but MacTheRipper couldn't see
it either.

I found the DVD in /Volumes and copied it to the HD. I then edited it
with myDVDEdit, tested it with DVD Player and wrote it to a DVD-R with
Toast Titanium. Everything worked fine, including testing with DVD
Player in myDVDEdit.

The Mac would not recognize or open the newly written DVD! I put the
DVD in a DVD player and it worked fine.

What's going on here? I have never had a problem opening a DVD on the
Mac and for the life of me I can't figure out why it is working for some
apps and not for others.

I found the problem. Sometimes it just [doesn't] work. I have had the
same problem with software for my Epson scanner. Restarting solves the
problem.

In this case, whatever app recognizes the DVD and mounts it for the OS X
system had died so the system didn't know it was there. Apps that can
use Unix mounts do work. Very confusing. Unfortunately, it happens so
infrequently that it took a while to figure it out.
