My iPod won't boot past the Apple logo, though it works 100% in Firewire
disk mode. I've tried restoring, formatting, repartitioning et al, but
nothing works. I do a disk scan and it comes up with an exclamation mark.

I finally got it to boot into diagnostic mode and did the disk scan from
there and got this:

HDD SCAN
HDD FAIL
0X00000059
WR FAIL

Anyone know what this means and how/if I can fix it? I've googled and
found two other people with the same problem but no solutions.

Cheers, Robert.

No idea but I suspect it stands for write fail. Because it works in disk
mode try diskwarrior to see if its a HD issue (eg a sector in the first
partition that ipod uses for your music or bootloading that is buggered) but
it may be more dire.

You've been rabbiting on about this for the past few weeks. I mentioned
it to my Apple dealer. I'd replace it he said.

Why don't you do the obvious - take it back. Replacement - no charge -
get over it.

It's over a year old and no Applecare. Apple don't fix the things; for
$50 less than a current new one they'd replace mine with a reconditioned
unit with a 3 month warranty.

I'm not stupid.

Cheers, Robert.

I had a go at that too; Diskwarrior reported a 77% out-of-order directory
and fixed it, but this had no effect. Techtool doesn't seem to want to
recognise anything other than my internal drives.

Cheers, Robert.

Of course you're not. But Draino is an arsehole :)
