VLC Media Player crashes with .avi files 
  I'm running VLC 0.9.9a -- the last release for PPC -- under OS X 10.4.11. I have Perian 1.1.3 component installed. All .avi videos I start playing crash within a few seconds.   I have a 10-year-old 50-inch HD Pioneer 1080p (1280 x 768) plasma display (no tuner at all) PDP-502MX. 2 monitors via DVI "Y" cable? 
  Is it possible to drive 2 monitors via a DVI "Y" cable? Is there anything about the cable that determines the output (ie resolution)? Or is all that controlled by software in Sys Prefs, etc.? TVMax, EyeTV, and built-in compression? 
  I'm sure, at one time, I had exported a video (recorded from broadcast) to iPod format (probably H.264) and it took a few seconds. It's been awhile since I did that, so memory is a bit fuzzy... When I tried a conversion today it took a half an hour because EyeTV is using software and the Mac's processor to do the conversion.... more »
