I have a 10-year-old 50-inch HD Pioneer 1080p (1280 x 768) plasma display (no
tuner at all) PDP-502MX.

Inputs are:

1) via Mini-D 15:
- RGB signal (G on SYNC)
- RGB w/no sync, HD, VD

2) via 5xBNC:
- Y w/negative sync, Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr
- Y, Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr, HD, VD

My questions:

1. When I view HD source (the only HDTV channel I get on the basic service is
one broadcast via ATT U-Verse IPTV set-top box) HD picture is displayed in
the center with large (4 in. above/below; 6 in. at sides) border around it.

What is the cause of this border? Isn't HD supposed to be full-screen? What
am I not understanding about this?

2. With my computer set to output the display's native (1280x768) size, the
display shows desktop with 6 inch bands on both sides. No matter the size
(all the way down to 600x800) or refresh rate the bands are there. Display
has options of different "screens" (4:3, zoom, full, natural wide, cinema
wide) but always defaults to 4:3 and cannot be changed, no matter what
monitor resolution I output from the computer.

When I connect via DVI to smaller (26 LCD) display, full desktop is shown, no
borders at all.

How can I get full 1280x768 displayed on plasma?

Thanks,

There are others but this one lists the H and V rates supported

http://www.planetomni.com/MSPLAS_PION_pdp-502mx_DTL.shtml

1280 x 720 should be no trouble with VGA assuming your video card can
do the right rates. NVidia should be OK and ATI 9200 and 9600 should
be OK too.

Does this mean I should be seeing full-screen with a video card that outputs?
As long as it outputs h frequencies 15.734 kHz to 67.5 kHz?

Here's the specs on the video chip:

Thanks.

The video specs for the computer are:

- DVI video output to support digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels;
... supports coherent digital displays up to 154MHz; supports noncoherent
digital displays up to 135MHz

- VGA video output (using included adapter) to support analog resolutions up
to 1920 by 1080 pixels

So it looks like the display is capable of large resolutions, and so is the
video card.

I'm using a no-name DVI-to-VGA cable. Does this determine the output of the
video card (ie, is it possible that the DVI connector is "jumpered" for a
particular resolution)?

The display only supports 1280x768, not 19200x1080. You can get the manual
here. Take note of the tables starting on page 85. Note that full screen
is not available for all modes.
