I just bought a Hitachi 2 TB drive which I had planned to put into a
Startech USB/Firewire enclosure.

I was surprised to find it worked ok on a PC, and Firewire was ok on my
Mac. But with the USB connection my Mac was not even aware there was a
drive connected.

This is on an iMac running 10.6.8, and occurred with several cables and
ports, though another USB drive was working fine.

I am wondering if this is a known problem, and if there is anything I
can try. Startech just said it ought to work.

Fortunately the enclosure is just within the return period.

it should work, although some enclosures may have issues with booting
(which isn't the issue here). return it.

Maybe a power issue? Was the enclosure running on its own power, or
powered though the USB connection?

Not familiar with Startech enclosures, so I can't help you otherwise.

good point. that shouldn't be an issue with recent macs and bus-powered
usb drives, but it's a possibility.

A 2 TB drive would be a 3.5" mechanism. No way that could be powered
through USB. The enclosure must have its own power supply.

Me either.

It might be possible to get further clues by seeing whether the
enclosure or drive show up in any way in System Profiler (while
connected to USB). Also have a look while it is connected via Firwire,
for comparison.

Also make sure you unplug the Firewire cable - the drive can't be
connected simultaneously via two interfaces.

Should have said, it is mains powered.

I will probably return it, but thought it was worth foing a bit
ofchecking first in case anyone knew of specific issues.
