Solution Found: I had a failed 250GB drive which I could not access.
After trying the steps that Lacie suggests (swapping cables and power
supply) and reading this board and others I tried the "freezer" trick,
which did not work. Then I tried swapping the Lacie covers/chassis
with a working drive of the same size/model and was able to
successfully access my data. From this I can conclude that the Western
Digital HD was fine, but the Lacie chassis failed. I will not be
buying Lacie Drives in the future.

Well, I've had four WD Elements 1TB external drives so far and two have
died on my (USB-to-SATA controller failiure both times. The first was
only my TimeMachine drive, so I just returned it for a new one. The
second I had lots of movies on and no backups, so I had to canibalize
the drive out of the enclosure to rescue the data. The drive was fine,
the controller failed.
These were both the 1st generation "silver" alu cases. Now I have two
2nd generation drives (black) and they have been good so far.

To avoid more stupid failiures I'm getting a Drobo.
