The problem is the drive won't mount on the Desktop when plugged
internally into my beige G3 PowerMac. Mac OS 9.2 simply ignores it while
Mac OS X 10.1.5 sees the drive but complains about not recognising the
format (which according to Disk Utility is "MS-DOS"). I've got the correct
jumper settings, but still no luck.
Is there any way to get this drive to mount on the Desktop on this G3
computer under either version of the Mac OS?
Or, if I get an external enclosure, will it mount via USB on a Mac OS X
10.5 iBook G4? (I don't really want to waste money on the enclosure I'll
only use once and find it won't still work.)
?:-(

I don't think you can have it mounted internally with either of those
OS versions, although ICBW. Does the drive appear in Disk Utility (or
Drive Setup, depending on OS version) at all? What options does DU
give for formatting a partition on your existing internal drive?

I have a FAT32 MS-DOS volume in an external firewire enclosure currently
mounted on my G5 iMac under OS 10.5.8. It worked fine under 10.4 also.

I should have added that it, too, is a Maxtor drive. And you can always
swap out the 4 GB for a much larger drive in the enclosure when you're
done; an extra backup drive never hurts!

Disk Utility sees the Windows 2000 hard drive as "MS-DOS", but the Finder
simply complains that it's an "unknown format". Either way it won't mount
on the Desktop.

Existing drive?? I'm not sure I've ever looked. There's actually four
internal drives. On one cable there are two hard drives (one Master and
one Slave) and on the other cable are the CD-ROM drive and Zip drive. All
work fine and I've been unplugging both the CD-ROM and Zip drives to plug
in the Windows 200 hard drive, so it's on its oen cable with no clashes
and has the correct jumper settings.

Thanks. I might try taking it down to one of the electronics / computers
shops and see if they have a demo enclosure I can put the drive in to then
plug into their demo iMacs / MacBooks to make sure it works before buying
it.

I haven't really gotten around to thinking about what to do with the
Windows hard drive once I get the files off it. I did think of using it as
a backup drive (possibily instead of the Zip drive which I rarely use
these days) ... 4GB is more than enough for my backup needs.
There's no Firewire on a beige G3. I have added a USB card, although it's
a bit slow and seems a bit flakey under Mac OS X - my USB pen drive
sometimes never mounts and can crash when copying files to / from it, but
works fine when I reboot into Mac OS 9.
I did buy an external USB case and put the Windows hard drive into it. It
still isn't recognised by the beige G3 under Mac OS 9 nor Mac OS X 10.1.5,
but it is recognised on the iBook G4 under Mac OS X 10.5 (although read
only, which doesn't matter since I only need to get files off it).
