depends on what the bridge wants. it probably wants master, but some
want cable select.

Yes, but it will be slow on some Macs (such as QuickSiivers) that use a
separate, slower, IDE controller for the optical bus.

It depends on the Mac. Some use CS (Cable Select). Set it to match
the optical drive you are removing. If it uses the end connector on
the cable, Master will work. If the end connector is already in use,
Slave will work.

Don't let them in the drives! Their hair will cause problems.
I am talking about putting it in an external case hooked up via USB.
It should work fine there, and it unlikely that the position of the
selector plug will matter. It would IF the USB adapter could handle two
drives, but I've never seen one of those. (Or maybe they all can but I
just never tried)...
