None, zero, nada, etc. etc.
If Apple wanted to get into the netbook scene they would have done it
already and many, many times Apple spokesmen have said they don't have
any plans to make one.
If you don't have one already check out the iPod touch, which can do
what a lot of netbooks can do and them some and it costs less than most
netbooks.

My expectation, based upon various rumors on the internet, is that Apple will
likely forego a "netbook" in favor of a tablet computer, something like a
large screen iPod touch with a touch sensitive screen. I expect this tablet
to be a huge success, especially when compared to the current "book readers"
which are capable of only black and white images.

There's also a huge difference between a little iPod Touch and the much
larger Etch-A-Sketch. ;)

OK, thank you. I don't follow stuff and didn't know that.

I've had my Touch for more than a year. :-) Thanks. I like the idea
of a larger screen, but something smaller than my iBook.

That's not what a net book is though. What you are describing is a
tablet. And rumor has it Apple's been hard at work on a tablet for some
time now.

I must have my terminology wrong. I've seen a couple netbooks at work
and have thought they'd be nice for toting on trips for email and web
use. Smaller than a laptop (would actually fit on a pull-down tray on a
plane?). If the tablet would do the same thing, I'll sit tight. Not
like I had a plan to run out and buy one, anyway. :-) Thanks again.

I think it is *I* who has is wrong. I think because I saw mention of
your "Touch" I envisioned you describing a touch screen that was larger
than an iPod Touch yet smaller than your iBook. If what you want is a
net book, I think the closest you're going to get to that sort of device
from Apple is a MacBook Air, which is nowhere near as cheap as most net
books. On the other hand, if you want a touch screen tablet, then I
would suggest waiting a few months to see if Apple releases anything of
the sort, as is rumored.
No, I wasn't expecting a touch screen. Thanks for the reply. I'll wait
and see what might come about. I'm lucky to have an Apple store within
easy reach to check things out.

Depends on what you mean by "netbook."
If you mean a very light weight computer with limited storage and is good
network appliance, then the Mac Air is there already.
But if you want a $300 device with a 5" screen, a cramped keyboard and sells
for about $300, then the chances are essentially zero.

There have been several experiments making a Hackintosh with small Dell
laptops. The overall opinion was that while it can be done, 'netbooks'
running *ANY* OS are miserable excuses for a computer because of all the
things they won't do. I'll leave you to google the articles since I
don't have the links handy.

CNET TV has an interesting RUMOR (emphasis added intentionally) with
mockup photos that Apple will announce a tablet (NOT a netbook) in early
January (after CES to steal its thunder) for sale in late spring. It'll
have a 10.7" screen, use a simplified touchscreen keyboard, and run the
iPhone OS.

Your Rumor Mileage May Vary.

Is this really true? -- Does MS really do this (for netbooks currently
on the market)? -- And can they get away with it?
If so, dismaying.

But this is really a limitation if for Windows XP. My Lenovo S-10 with
2.5 GB memory and a 160 Hard drive is running Windows 7 Enterprise and
is doing a reasonable job of it.

Thanks, Martin! I've forwarded this to Macintouch.
Check this out. I'm not advocating, just passing it on. And the usual
caveats apply.

Those machines were not bad for a lot of tasks, I used an 800GHz G4 for
years. I was running OSX too. On a netbook you run Linux anyhow, so much
faster. They weigh a ton however, getting away from which is the point.

No keyboard? Smaller screen?
A "netbook" isn't merely a smaller laptop, it's a minimal computer. It's
not intended for doing all kinds of things, it's intended to provide some
computing power in a package that you are likely to carry with you. It
strips out things like DVD drives, and initially hard drives. It did some
things well, and if you needed more intensive work, the small screen size
and the small keyboard would start being a limiting factor.
If you're doing a lot of typing, you may find a small keyboard a problem.
If you are doing a lot of screen work, likewise the small screen could be
a problem.
But hey, if you want to check email, a netbook is good for that. If you
want to check a website for information when you aren't home, it's good
for that too. It's good for taking notes, it's good for showing off
photos, it's good for lots of things that you want portability for.
An iPod or a PDA are limited compared to "netbooks", but they are even
more portable. They also don't take as long to start up, and presumably
use less power to run. So instead of standing on a street corner with a
netbook opened up, trying to get a map so you can find where that venue
is, you can so easily pull out the iPod or PDA and get going faster, and
without looking a tad silly holding the netbook.
I debated getting a PDA and then decided I'd get more for the money with a
netbook, and the keyboard was in the end pretty important to me.
Then after I bought the netbook, I only then realized an iTouch would do a
lot of what I needed, albeit with no keyboard and no apparent memory
expansion, but cheaper than the PDAs and yes, cheaper than the netbook.

I think there's garbling, someone thinking that your secondary post is
talking about a "bigger iPod" rather than a full fledged small laptop.
Your terminology is correct. A "netbook" is a small laptop, intended for
portability rather than full function. They are small and light (I
carried mine around a lot this summer, and really didn't notice the extra
weight, and it's worth noting that I have a laptop bag for a Powerbook 100
and the netbook fits in the accessory pouch on that). Their use is
limited by the small screen and keyboard, so any "lesser" specs compared
to a more expensive laptop doesn't really matter.
Michael
I'm pretty sure it's also defined as being in the ~$300 range.
