Everything's plugged in where it should be; the printer has no power
switch and is always on; the 300 is chosen in the Chooser - printer port,
AppleTalk and Background Printing off; Printer Descriptions and Extensions
in order, best I can tell.
Any hints?
TIA

I believe that the Personal LaserWriter 300 and 8.6 are incompatible. Yes,
I know they are both the work of Apple.
I also believe that there are some AppleScript workarounds that make it
possible to use your printer with OS 8.6.
I downloaded it/them for a friend who has a 300, but he has no desire to
go to 8.6.
If you can't find them on the Internet, please let me know and I'll look
for it/them on my drives and send them to you.

You're thinking of the LaserWriter 310. The Personal LW 300 is fully
compatible with 8.6.
