My MacBook Pro will boot just fine if the power brick is attached. If
the brick is unattached, even when the battery indicates a 100% charge,
it will normally not boot but will just make a hissing sound. Every
once in a while it does boot from the battery. I have tried replacing
the battery and this didn't help.

Any thoughts will be appreciated!

A hissing sound? Very interesting! I'd love to hear an audio recording!

Sounds like a PMU/SMC problem. You might try resetting the PMU/SMC to
see if that fixes the issue.

It could be a connection issue with the battery. Cleaning the connectors
inside the laptop may help, but they could be loose inside the casing.

We have an old MacBook that just about works which hisses when the loose
power socket (the non-MagSafe type) isn't connecting properly - the socket
needs to be re-soldered onto the small circuit board.

And to prove the point, the MacBook has just decided to commit suicide.
Because the socket is loose (and the battery useless), to maintain power
you often have to jiggle the power plug ... which resulted in the plastic
around the cable wearing, and just now it started smoking and had to be
unplugged from the wall.

Moral: Do not muck about with power from the wall or battery - get it
fixed or replaced.
