Can anyone help me on getting Heroes III run in the classic env. ?
I can start os 9 in X, do everything, run all apps, no problems.
But when I play Heroes III after some time playing it just crashes, the
game stops, the screen goes black and back to osx, then Heroes III is
still in the dock. I cannot quit it, and will only go away when I force
quit is several times. And only after doing that classic can be
stopped.
I did clean installs of mac os 9, used a disk image as play disk, used
a normal cd, ran classic from a system folder copied from a working os9
machine. Nothing works, situation is always the same. I can play for a
short time without any problems, but it always crashes after a short
time (but I have time enough to save the game, it's like after 5 mins
before it crashes)
If anyone can help me on this... Thanks
I'm not sure if this is really any help except to say that it really is
possible to play Heroes III under Classic because I still play quite
often. I have MDD G4 dual 1GHz , 1Gb RAM with OSX10.3.9, and Classic
System Folder with OS9.2.2. Runs Heroes III v. 4.0 (size 3.2Mb) from
the Heroes III Complete distribution with the Play Disk as a disk
image. Never had any problems.
I suppose you used the old OS9 'magic' of loading with no or minimal
extensions?
Kit
I also play a lot of Heroes III (v4.01) running under Classic on 10.3.9
on an upgraded G4/533 Digital Audio (now dual 1.6GHz G4s). It works
fine, I rarely have a crash and I assume it'd be crashing in the same
spot if I was running it under OS 9.
I also play Civ2Gold and Civ: Call to Power under Classic all the time
with no problems, but I have the exact same problem you have with Heroes
III trying to play Master of Orion II under Classic - both on my G4 and
my PowerBook G3/500. Does almost the same thing, but I don't end up
with MOO2 stuck in the background. It goes completely away like it was
quit. A friend runs it on his G4 Mini just fine.
Ran across someone who had the same thing happening with Civ2Gold...
It seems to be something that just happens to some people with some
programs. Don't know why...

Do you know what the update from v4.0 to v4.01 did?
I was just wondering if it's worthwhile me hunting down a patch.

I am on a Gigabit Ethernet 1.8Ghz G4, 1.5G ram, Radeon 9800PRO, should
run it, eh?
The no extension startup results in Heroes III erroring about
quicktime.. So no go on that.
I copied the exact setup from a working OS 9 iMac crt, the system
folder 9.2.2 Heroes III Complete
which runs perfect on the 400mhz G3. But no go on the classic in X...
Any other suggestions?
I'd love to play this game, Before I had this PowerMac and the Full
version of Heroes III I had to play the demo on the iMac...
But this seems like it's a known issue, not only with my setup, not
only with Heroes III.
If you can think of anything, please post it.. Thanks

I check in nearly every day. Most of the time, nothing is happening, but
every once in a while there is a little flurry of activity. So, no, not dead
yet.
:-)

Probably not worth anything, but I just had a vagrant thought. Are you
running any peripherals or have installed any PCI cards that required extra
software to run, including extensions? Reason I ask is that after I
installed a third party card that allowed extra USB connections to my G4, I
could no longer put my Mac to sleep, and some of my other apps began doing
funny things from time to time. Running TechTool didn't reveal any
conflicts, but you never know...

Not offhand. I'd have to track it down to find out myself.
You might just have to play it under OS 9 instead of Classic. I have to
do it with a game. It sucks, but sometimes there's nothing that can be
done about it.
Otherwise your setup should run it good. The Radeon 9800 Pro doesn't do
graphics acceleration under OS 9, but then Heroes III doesn't need it so
it doesn't matter.
That's a problem, I cannot boot into OS 9 for 2 reasons:
1. The cpu upgrade patched the firmware and now it won't boot os 9...
But that can be solved with another patch.
2. I run Mac OS X for some Server activities like http, ftp, mail
etc...
So I can't have a big downtime...
But I read on the net, many users report to be able to play Heroes III
in classic very well.

Ah, a PPC 7447 processor upgrade? That's what my upgrade is and I can
boot into OS 9 with it patched, but I get no sound 99% of the time.

You could try creating another user on your system and trying to play
from that user. I have a different user than my main account for
playing games.

But there might just be something particular that's unknown about your
system and you just might not be able to run it. That's life under OS X.

Oh, we're all here, it's just we don't seem to have as much
to talk about as we used to. Might it be worth it to the conversation
for the regulars to, say, take one day of the week in which they will
make an on-topic post to start a thread, and let the others respond or
not respond as they like? Such ``Nicoll Threads'' have been known in
the past to do healthy bits in revitalizing newsgroups, and I think
even I could come up with *something* relevant to Mac strategy games if
it was just once a week, plus popping in with whatever responses to
everybody else's threads that I like.

Or something else you could try is to install the patch for OS 9, boot
into OS 9, start the game, play a couple of turns, save it, reboot into
OS X and then see if the game works for you.

That's a thought. But it seems to me that if people had anything to say,
they'd already be saying it. Don't let me put out the fire though, I'm
willing to have a go at it...if I can think of anything to post.

It worked! I made a gaming account, and now Heroes III Complete runs
perfectly with Mac OS X / Classic and a disk image! Thanks!
And yes, it is a PPC 7447 upgrade, powerlogix.
Thanks alot, hope this will help others too.
Keep posting!

Now you get to experience time disappearances. Happens to me all the
time with Heroes III. It can be 11 at nite, I'll think "just one more
turn" and the next thing I know it's 1am...

I have a Giga Designs dual processor upgrade with the PPC 7447's.

You're welcome, I'm glad we got it working for you.

According to the updater, the following was fixed:
- Game now correctly runs Spoils of War campaign.
- Trade with Allied Heroes in a multiplayer game no longer randomly
displays any memory errors.
- Inadequate Video Settings Dialog no longer appears when running in
Millions of COlors.
This does only apply to the Heroes III: Complete program, probably not
the early version.
It's only about 400K. If anyone wishes a copy, e-mail me and we'll work
something out.
I had the time disappearance yesterday, at midnight I indeed wanted
'just one more turn'... At 4am I went to bed ;-P

Welcome to the Heroes III Insomniacs Club...
(He said, jumping back in late -- I've been travelling.)
Well, I think the flurries of activity we get around here show
there's a reasonable-sized population reading regularly and happy to
leap in as soon as something to talk about it suggested. So, trying to
deliberately lower the ... call it the 'opportunity cost' of starting a
thread would probably help the group out. At least, when I've got my
schedule cleared a bit, I'm glad to plunge in with trying to provoke
conversation.
