I recently heard that Jane's flight sims are no more. I don't think
that they ever did anything for the Mac, though, so not of tremendous
interest here. Their sims were basically the descendants of the old
Chuck Yeager's Air Combat and were not known for super realism. Good
graphics, though. They still have a strong following, and F-18 and
Longbow 2 were considered really good.

The obvious question is why a Mac froup would be using a web site that
is strictly PC?

Hmm. As a Mac (exclusively) user, I never played any of them, but I followed
their progress avidly through the computer gaming press, and if what I read
there is any indication, a number of people would strongly disagree with
you. I think that for quite a while, Longbow and Longbow II were the gold
standard for flight sim realism. The campaign was one of the features that
was especially lauded.

World class in their day.

They did put out a sim or two that received lukewarm receptions. I think
their A-10 sim might have fallen into that category. I think the problem was
that their A team of designers/developers were fired/resigned and their
replacements just weren't up to the same standard. Jane's then decided that
this wasn't a market that interested them enough to put the resources into
it on a sufficient scale to excel, so they threw in the towel.

I love that mexican accent, Yul Brynner as Pancho Villa isn't it?

Why, Richard! Wisdom? You???

No, no. Stick around. I think we better keep an eye on you. At least until
the incubation period is passed.
Michael
Mexican accent?!? And you live in Arizona? Dale, you need to get out more.
Michael
You are right. I didn't make myself clear. Longbow 1 & 2 are very
respected and were supposed to have some excellent features. The Chuck
Yeager descendants are USAF and WWIIF, both of which I have on my PC.
They are tremendous fun, like CYAC was, but do not have very realistic
flight models (by today's standards). However, there are some 3rd party
flight model modifications which have made them better sims than when
they were issued. both still have a large following even though they
are now bargain bin games.

Uh-oh. Better set your stun guns to 'obliterate', boys. Just to be on the
safe side.

No argument there. The little bit that I know and can recall is consonant
with your statement.

Uh, Chief, are we shooting at that dopey looking guy in the cow suit?

That's the one...DON'T POINT THAT THING AT ME GODAMMIT!!!
Whew!

Why not a nuke? Clears the whole area faster than you can say
'preventive clearing' <- (not good English, but a literal translation of
the term the Dutch govt uses for the EU policy in these matters)

In the US, we call it "area denial" :) And use B-52's to achieve it :))

I thought I was posting in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim. Sorry. I
guess they are history. They made some of the best sims like 688 Hunter
Killer, F-15, Fighters Anthology and Longbow Anthology. The 688 submarine
simulation was probably the best sub simulation on any computer. It's sad to
see them go.

They never released A-10. It was scrubbed because they decided they were
going to simulate the A-10 in USAF. It seems to be the trend in the industry
today. Long standing simulation companies are going down. Microprose who made
great simulations in the olden days and recent years was bought by Hasbro. They
put out Spectrum Holobyte's Falcon 4.0, Mechwarrior 3 and M1 Tank Platoon 2. Then
Hasbro, being owned by Microsoft decided to close Microprose. They basically
killed the competition to their own simulations. Sims aren't selling as much as
RPG and RTS games but maybe the kids will get tired of RTS and then Sims can make
a comeback.
