Subject: [*] /game/strip-mac10.hqx (second release)

[This file replaces game/strip-mac-10.hqx -- the beta version.]

This is the second release of Strip-Mac!, a slightly risque computer-moderated
card game for two or more adult players. Extensive online documentation can be
found under the application's apple-menu.

Briefly, the game plays as follows: Players take turns in drawing a card from
the deck. If a player fails to turn up an appropriate card then s/he must
choose between options that include:
(a) removing a piece of clothing;
(b) taking a punishment card; and
(c) purchasing a reward card.
Play continues until one or all players are naked. What happens next is up to
you. :-)

recently i posted a question about the Amiga SoundTracker for the Mac...
I received many responses from people interested in obtaining it themselves.
Please post it to the info-mac archives as /sounds/soundtracker.hqx so that the
entire info-mac community has access to it.

Note: I am _not_ the author. I obtained it from ab20.larc.nasa.gov... however,
im not sure how long it will stay there, as it is a big amiga site.
It comes with a readme and a translations file (It was done by a german program
mer, and some of the message boxes are still in german)...

I put a copy of the DiskDoublerPatchKit which updates DiskDoubler
3.7.x to 3.7.5. The ReadMe document claims that there's a help file for
use with system 7, but when I downloaded this from America OnLine, I there
was no such file. So System 7 users who use balloon help on the DD menu
will get inappropriate balloons. But functionally, the updated version
works fine. The main new fact is that 3.7.5 works well with AutoDoubler.
The file is a self-extracting archive (DD format) in binary form.

Subject: [*] Excalibur 1.1 - LaTeX Spelling Checker

Excalibur is a Macintosh spelling checker for LaTeX documents. It also
does a fairly good job with plain TeX files. It reads files of type
TEXT and it is smart enough to ignore most LaTeX commands and a fair
number of plain TeX commands. Since it just ignores these commands, it
will also serve quite nicely as a spelling checker for any TEXT file
that doesn't contain any LaTeX or TeX commands. (It is not completely
accurate to say that Excalibur ignores LaTeX commands. It will process
any arguments that contain text).

Excalibur is a stand-alone application that we have tested with both
OzTeX and Textures documents. The fact that it is a stand-alone
application should not present any inconvenience since it works with
MultiFinder under System 6 and it is compatible with System 7.

This is version 1.1. It is a significant improvement over version
1.0.

You will need System 6.0 or higher to run Excalibur.

There is extensive on-line help. You will find it under the Apple
menu if you are running System 6, and under the Balloon Help menu if
you are running System 7 or greater.

Subject: [*] Finger 1.3.5

Finger v1.3.5 & Fingerd v1.3.5 is an implementation of the UNIX Finger
protocol for Macs with MacTCP. Fingerd is a background only application
that allows you to be fingered, while Finger is a finger client, allowing
you to finger other machines, as well as allowing others to finger you.
Both are System 7 friendly (but hopefully not dependent).

Changes in this version:
Actually included the correct version of the daemon (oops :-), fixing the
bug with QUIT appleevents that caused Fingerd to crash on Shutdown
Added a setable default for the Finger window
Colourized icons - Thanks to Don Nash for the icons!
Fixed it so that the strings which are returned by tokens are translated
7->8
Fixed %LOOKUP to not uppercase the line.
Added a menu item to save the finger hierarchical menu
Added a preference to automatically open the Finger window on startup
Added Option-Quit to quit Fingerd & Finger.
Change "Finger" to "Whois" when you click the Whois check box
Reversed the position of user & machine so user comes first
Allow chained fingering in the client (eg ro...@foo.edu@bar.edu)
Should be more difficult to crash with out of memory, though still
possible.
Fixed the edit menu selections.
Changed %LOG to put a time stamp in as well.

They are Povertyware, which basically means you get to send me five
dollars if you can. If you use these programs, drop me a note and say
hello!

Hope you like them,

Scripting level from the user preferences card. The version of HyperCard 2.x

Attached is a submission of a DEMO version of ASC's FTP Server init/cdev.
I know that you don't normally like demo's, but I thought that this one
was quite important given the number of people who have requested such an
application over the last few years on news.

I hope that even if you don't add it to rascal, you would forward it on to
the other sites to allow them to make their own decision.

Many thanks for you consideration

Rob Trevor

-----------------------------------------------------

After a couple of years searching for a good background FTP Server, I've
finally found a product that does this in a quite flexible way. Advanced
Software Concepts (France) have just developed an INIT/CDEV FTP Server
and Monitor that is able to manage a list of users, each with an individual
password, a specific directory sub-tree and an access mode (read/write/
read-write).

I'm currently evaluating a demo version which I have set up to give myself
read/write to all mounted volumes, my co-authors read/write to their
particular project sub-trees, and anonymous read-only to a public sub-tree.
You can allow a limited number of simultaneous users, and limit connection
times. I run a large number of inits, but have only found a 'loading-
order' conflict with Screen Locker from Now Utilities (it seems to need to
run last).

Since many people have posted news messages looking for something similar,
I thought that the demo should be made available to them as well. (ASC
allows re-distribution of the demo.) The demo expires on May 1, 1992.

A BinHex'd Compact Pro archive is attached containing the 'FTP Monitor'
and 'FTP Server' CDEV's as well as the 'TCPack' Comm Toolbox connection
tool which they require and an optional 'FTPool' application for those
who prefer app's to CDEV's. It also includes a demo of the 'FTPack'
Comm Toolbox transfer tool and the 'FTPeek' FTP application.

For further information, contact Advanced Software Concepts,
AppleLink: ADV.SOFT (@applelink.apple.com from Internet),
Fax: (33) 93 24 76 06.

As you can tell, I really like the look and functionality of this product.
Other than that, I have no affiliation with ASC. I'm not even a customer
of their's -- yet :)

Subject: (Q) Modem Standards?

Hello fellow netters,

Fearing that the divestiture of ATT would cause world panic and the
cessation of all communications I postponed upgrading my 1200 baud modem
to something a bit stronger.

While waiting for the sky to fall, I didn't pay attention and I am now
totally bewildered by the options that are available for modem
communications. Things are not as easy as they once were. I was
planning on going out and just buying a 2400 or 9600 baud modem when all
these other terms reared their heads. v.32, v.42 (and probably a v.52
too), bis, MNP levels 1-5 ..........ad nauseam.

Where can a person go to get smart about the current state of modem
communications? I have heard rumors that the Jan 91 Mac User had an
article but I recently tossed every issue from the PREMIER to June 91.
(It was that or move them a 4th time to a new home. But I kept my
original HABADEX disk :-) ).

I tried the local library but "the book" had been checked out and the
librarian went home for three weeks. (They probably only have PC World
anyway.)

I have a 800 number for US Robotic's but there voice mail system has not
yielded any response.

Any other suggestions/ 800 #'s/ or advice. Any and all would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

AutoDoubler and DiskDoubler are entirely different packages. The DiskDoubler
Updaters that come out with AutoDoubler are intended simply to make sure that
those people who run BOTH are running "synchronous" versions; when something
is changed in AutoDoubler that causes DiskDoubler to "break", both packages

The software that came with my Syquest 44MB Removable drive will only

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

IMHO DiskFit Pro from Dantz is outstanding. Once, when backing up I ran
out of Floppy disks. This was no problem at all. Just stop the backup,
get more disks, and DiskFit Pro will continue where it left off! If
info has changed on any of the disks already in the set, it will ask for
them and then update the info. If the computer crashes during a backup
or you get a power outage, you start where you left off. You can also
mix and match volumes. So you could use a combination of floppies and
Syquest carts if you wanted too. Your info is stored in a Finder
readable format and a spiffy report is generated listing all your files
in alphabetical order and showing the volume number each file is
residing on. Using system 7.0, you can tell the program to create a
folder containing an alias of all your files. Click on the alais and
you will be prompted for the proper volume to insert. In all, a
terrific product.

Question--is there a keyboard command for refreshing the zone list in the
Chooser? I know, it's automatic, but it can take 40 seconds for the chooser to
realize that it has been unplugged from the network.

Anybody heard of something that would cause the zone list to refresh itself?
Other than:
1) closing and reopening the chooser (a pain) or
2) turning AppleTalk on and off (not so bad, except disconnects all file

Thanks!

>control an automatic door (the ones that somebody presses a button and

I don't get it: You press a button but still want to open the door with
your *hand* ????

Anyway, here goes:

You could try it with a serial to parallel converter (to hook up a parallel
printer to a serial port, as on the Mac).

At one of the pins you could place an opto-relais and presto! you
can control 220V AC current (or 110V AC in some backward countries :^)

I only hope that the converter contains a buffer, else you might need
some more electronics (some TTL buffer or flip-flop)
Maybe you need a little transistor buffer between the converter and the
opto-relais, but most of the times it works straight away.
If you're not into soldering stuff: forget it (or ask a friend)

The only thing you need to do now is write a program that uses the serial
port to open the door (Might be tricky on the Mac, never wrote a program that
communicated directly with the serial port, although you don't need to)

For testing purposes you can also use a PD or commercial terminal program.

Have fun with your automated door!

In response to a query about what Crash Barrier accomplishes, here is
an excerpt from the April (!) MacWorld "Bug Report" column (p.123):

Crash Barrier 1.0: Crashes Mac...

Well, *I* thought it was funny, but I bet the buyers of 1.0 didn't. Casady
& Greene is now up to 1.03, which it will send to registered users on
request. One would have hoped that they wouldn't wait to be asked, but there
you are.

Later in the same issue (p. 208) there's a review of 1.01. Pros: Witty manual,
good auto-saver, money-back guarantee. Cons: Works only sometimes or not at
all. In other words, you can entertain yourself with the jokes in the manual
while hassling with the paperwork to get your money back as you freeware
autosaver saves your work.

In more detail, CB intervenes when you have a software crash and puts up its
own dialog box instead of the bomb box. You get to choose between buttons
optimistically called "Fix It", "Un-Hang" etc., but most of the time none
of them work. David Pogue reports that in the 2 months CB was installed
on a IIcx, there were "33 system crashes and Crash Barrier succeeded in
exiting the crash only once." He also says that the programmer told him that
the program only works for "certain types of crashes", and after telephoning
around, found that lucky users have as much as a 75% recovery rate.
But amazingly, he doesn't deign to inform us hoi polloi *which* types of
crashes it's effective for.

By coincidence, the postings concerning the availability of DeskPaint
and DeskDraw came just after I received my copy direct from Zedcor.

I have not used the programs enough to fully comment on them, but the
deal I got them with was one I couldn't refuse.

For $49.95 plus $6.00 shipping you get:

DeskPaint (color, autotrace and other features)
DeskDraw (color support)
DeskFile (a database that I hope I can use instead of of DAtaBase--to
overcome of some its shortcomings--DAtabase's that is)
DeskWrite (a word processor with capabilities to flow text around graphics
and other capabilities that really look nice--and simple to use
DeskCom (MockTerminal updated but still with no VT100 emulation.
For the life of me have never figured out why this terminal DA
has not included VT100 emulation)
DeskSecretary (a reminder program with alarms)
DeskCalc (an updated version of BiPlane including charting functions
that appear to be as easy to use as Wingz's)

All come as DAs and as standalone applications. It is recommended that
one use the standalone applications with System 7 and the DA's with
system 6.0.5.

In addition, Zedcor offers a 60 day money back guarantee. So you can try it and
"if for any reason with the next two months you decide you aren't satisfied
with Desk, simply return it for a no questions, no hassles refund."

Normally I wouldn't comment on a software package without having
experimented with it fully, but since I ordered it on a Monday and received
it on Friday, I have not had the time. Anyway, if you are interested,
the money-back guarantee allows you to decide for yourself.

It is not clear from my mail solicitation that the software is available
to the public. It is clear that the offer is not available either
to or from dealers. The letter's salutation was to "Macintosh Opinion Leader"
--whatever that means--but I figure that anyone reading the Info-Mac

Somehow my last message got terribly truncated and the important part
of the instructions for printing got chopped! Made me look foolish, too.
Anyhow, I do know what I'm doing! Here are the steps to printing
on QuickDraw printers under System 7.0:

1) Launch FP Spooler but not Freedom of Press.
2) In Chooser, select the LaserWriter driver and FP Spooler as the device.
3) Print your document(s). It get spooled to disk, so hope you have room!
4) Go back to chooser and select your QuickDraw printer driver and device.
5) Launch Freedom of Press and tell it to print your spooled document(s).

This two-step approach isn't optimal, but it works. Custom Applications
is working on a System 7 compatible version of Freedom of Press. Next
time call their customer support line. You'll get much quicker answers

Subject: Frontier or QuickKeys (Q)

Hi y'all!

Well, I got tired of waiting and waiting for Affinity MicroSystems to get their
act together and ship a system 7 compatible upgrade of Tempo II. They
originally took orders for this (including mine) last spring. I just called
and they STILL do not know when they will ship! So I cancelled my order.

This leaves me with the following dilemma: QuickKeys or Frontier? Here is what
I know so far about either:

QuickKeys: Pro: Cheaper! About $100 or less via mail-order. Interface is
probably similar to MacroMaker & Tempo, including
auto-recording of macros so shouldn't be to hard to use. I
presume can control non-AppleEvent-aware apps the same way
these things have been doing since before sys7.

Con?: Can a single QuickKeys Macro control events in multiple
applications? Is it as powerful at a low-level as Frontier?
To my knowledge, Quickeys has no 'variables' or expression
operations. Does it have logical constructs?

Frontier: Pro: Apparently a full-featured scripting language complete
with sub-scripts, looping, case statements, variables,
'Object-Database'(sort of a object-oriented common-block),
over 350 verbs, etc. Can control any AppleEvent-aware apps.
Provides quick&dirty 'command-line-interface' window as
well as full, outline-based, script-editor. Can do some
data-manipulation.

Con?: I don't believe it can control older, non-AE-aware
apps. No auto-recording of scripts. Expensive. UserLand
currently wants $179 for it. They say 'small price for all
the power it delivers'. I say 'It don't do nuttin' until I
tell it what to do!' Granted, though, if it were $80 cheaper,
I would snap it up in an instant! This is the sort of software
I wish just came with the system, or barring that, was
so cheap that it would seem like a necessity. If it was $50
you know that pretty soon there would be so many scripts
written that everyone would want it! Obviously UserLand feels
margin is more important at this time than establishing a
standard. They are not currently offering an educ. discount.

If any of the above info is incorrect, I would appreciate a quick-correction
(please don't flame me). I would appreciate any and all opinions on the
merits and demerits of these two products and any other macro/scripting tools
that I apparently do not know about. My requirements are that it run on sys7,
be 32-bit and '040-cache-happy, and be able to predict this year's AL & NL
batting-champions.

If I get a decent amount of replies of useful info, I will summarize.

Here is a question for the HyperTalk experts. I am trying to figure

word x of container y

char x to y of container z.

How can I get the value returned to be the word number?

P. Smith (PSM...@UTXVM.BITNET)

This question proved to be more difficult than I anticipated. First off,
P. Smith, if you could re-work your code so that you don't HAVE to have
a word number you could just return the word with the function clickText.
If you really need the number of the word and your field does not contain
too many words you could use a repeat loop like this:

on mouseDown
put the clickText into temp
repeat with x = 1 to the number of words in card 1
if temp = word x of card fld 1 then
put x
exit repeat
else
next repeat
end if
end repeat
end mouseDown

Still, there's a bit of confusion that you could help resolve. You could

In any case, Disinfectant could (should?) probably look in both places and

Since two Cornell sophomores have been arrested and charged with

In your case you'd probably either have to pursue the matter as part of

I have heard _nothing_ about this at all. Perhaps the rumor could
have started by someone completely missing what I said about the virus
in TidBITS an issue or two ago. If the virus has infected the SoftPC
hard disk and you have a E: volume defined to be a Mac folder, then
it _might_ be possible for damage to Mac files to occur if the Michelangelo
virus is activated on March 6th. This does not imply in any way (and
I was clear about this in the article) that Michelangelo is a Mac
virus. It's not ... and I hope I'm right about that. :-)

It's a slim possibility, but a nasty one nonetheless. If you're at
all concerned, I recommend (a) checking SoftPC's hard disk with a
recent PC virus checking program or (b) changing the date so your computer
never sees March 6th (but this will just increase the number of infections

Yes, I would say that it was a bad decision. We have been in contact with
Microsoft about an upgrade. They had promised an upgrade several months ago,
and then said they ran into a problem which put the upgrade on hold
indefinitely.

It is really inexcusable for Microsnot (oops, typo) to continue to sell and
market a product which hasn't ever been upgraded (just a few new computer
releases) since its initial release many years ago, and doesn't work with
system 7. I guess they want to get as much return as possible out of their
investment with as little effort as possible. Or, they want to put all their
effort into Visual Basic for Windows. While the product had promise when first
introduced, it really doesn't stand up at all to today's most minimal software
standards, and is a very limited programming environment.

Incidentally, QuickBasic seems to work OK in the interpreted mode under system
7, but you cannot compile. A compiled application also seems to run OK.

OFFICE MEMO RE: DiskDoubler Icons Date:2/26/92
The Auto/DiskDoubler effect whereby compressed files may take on the look of
their usual icon with a "DD" on it does NOT require any change to the file;
it's a trick that just LOOKS like the file has the new icon. If you run
without the DD/AD extension, you lose the effect. In other words, the "DD"
icon is NOT being "written" over the old icon inside the file.

Subject: Stack Underflow error (Q) again!

Please help. I posted the following message last week and got only one
response (about upgrading SuperPaint; it really didn't address the problem).
We've always gotten extensive and useful help from fellow netters in the past,
and I hope this won't be an exception!

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I'm having a problem and I hope someone can help me. I created a chart using
SuperPaint 2.0 and exported it to ReadySetGo! 4.5a as page 2 of a 3-page
document (38k) on an 800k floppy. When I went to print it on our LaserWriter
II NT, it went through all its usual messages ("Processing job" etc.), gave no
indication of any problems, but simply didn't print anything. I then tried it
one page at a time. Pages 1 and 3 printed fine, but page 2 (with the PICT
chart) wouldn't print at all. This time I got the message: "Error: stack
underflow; offending command: exch" followed by a second message: "A
PostScript error has been generated by the LaserWriter extension file. The
document is OK but cannot be printed". Then I tried to print the chart
directly from SuperPaint. No printing; same messages. To test SuperPaint I
tried to print both a smaller SP document and a larger one (with a scanned
image). Both printed fine. Tried it with a third SP document. Same messages.
Weird! Then I took my floppy to a colleague's Mac (her's is a Plus with 2 megs
of RAM; mine is an SE with 4 megs; both running System 6.05; both networked to
the same printer; both with identical programs) and both the RSG! document and
the original SuperPaint document printed without a hitch! I copied her
SuperPaint, replaced mine with it, tried to print -- and nothing again. None
of the so-called Mac mavens on campus (myself included) can explain any of
this.

So, can anyone explain the problem? How can I solve it? Could there be
something in my system folder (that's not in my colleague's) that's causing
this? Could it be the SuperPaint pref file? And what does "Stack underflow"
mean? (Sounds like the name of a detective in a cheap novel.) I'd appreciate
any help anyone can give. Thanks in advance.

Subject: StyleWriter Refill

To refill a stylewriter cartridge: go to your local drugstore and get a
syringe with a small needle and about 5 or 10 cc capacity. Buy some chemical
ink (I used Parker Permanent Black super Quink Ink - itUs the only one our
bookstore had available). Do not use India ink because the particles
suspended in the ink will clog the printhead (unless India ink has changed to
a chemicals only formula). Fill the syringe with ink and insert the needle
into the small recessed hole in the upper right side of the cartridge. Insert
the needle at least 1 inch into the hole (you may need to use some pressure to
get the needle thru the gasket that seals the hole). Inject the ink slowly
and then repeat several times. I think that it took about 15 or 20 cc before
the ink came back out of the hole (keep some tissue around to mop up the
excess and perform the whole operation on some newspapers). Protect the
printhead from contact with anything as it is easily damaged. The guts of the
cartridge is just a sponge that has to be saturated with ink.

Subject: SuperCard DoubleClicks (Q)

Time for all you SuperCard hackers to put on your thinking caps!
SuperCard (or even Hypercard) do not deal with single clicks and double clicks
very gracefully. In SuperCard a List Field can act on two handlers;
Clicklist and DoubleClickList. So if you want to perform an action based on
a single click then the script would be
ON ClickList
Beep -- or do whatever here
END Clicklist
The same holds for DoubleClickList. The PROBLEM IS THAT BOTH MESSAGES GET SENT
WHEN DOUBLE CLICKING. Thus, you cannot prevent the single click message from be
ing sent.
The old Hypercard trick of waiting for 20 or 30 ticks and seeing if the mouse
is down does not really work... Becasue the handler does not care WHERE the
second mouse click occurs. If the click occurs away from the object it still
considers it a double click! I cannot figure a way to exit from the ClickList
gracefully. I want to do one action on a single click and do another action
(without doing the first action) on a double click.
Thanks.

As suggested by Michael O'Henly, the bug in System 7 which makes files
disappear is a bug in System 7. Not just 7.0.1 or Tune-Up...it's a bug that
exists in ALL three "flavors" of System 7.

And the reCoverUp utility doesn't always work. I have had to completely
reformat disks before in order to clear the problem.

It seems that it wasn't only me who thought that Wingz for the Mac had
been given up on by Informix, since the product didn't even figure in
the recent MacWeek piece on spreadsheets, drawing some letters from
Wingz users. Anyway, today I got Informix News and found, as usual,
practically nothing about Wingz for the Mac. No ads in any recent publications
that I could find either.

HOWEVER: a call to Informix produced assurances that the product is
continuing to be developed and sometime this year a System 7 exploitative
update will be released. So it looks like I won't be sidegrading to 1-2-3
or Resolve after all. But if Lotus would release Improv for the Mac...

I have just refilled my Deskwriter cartridge for the 11th time, and it
still prints great. I have printed about 9 reams of paper on this
printer with one cartridge in the past 10 months. Cost: $400 for the
printer, $14 for the cartridge, and $1.71 for the bottle of ink, and
the syringe was free. Definitly cheaper than a Personal Laserwriter.

Not only that, but refilling the cartridges saves a LOT of waste. If you
haven't figured out how to refill them, I suggest you learn. sumex has
a report on refilling cartridges in its archives.
