Subject: [*] System 7 Tune-up

This is a disk image of the new "System 7 Tune-up" from Apple. Since
mjoh...@apple.com (who is in charge of the Apple ftp site) has requested
that users make it available via ftp to others in order to reduce their ftp
load, I assume that it is OK to post to Info-Mac.

The file is a Disk Copy image of an 800K disk; if you don't have Disk
Copy, you'll need to ftp it from ftp.apple.com or find another source.

Here is the readme file:

System 7 Tune-Up 1.0 Feature Summary

IMPROVED SYSTEM BEHAVIOR IN LOW MEMORY SITUATIONS

Fewer memory size alerts
When the user opens an application, if the available memory is less than the
application prefers but more than its minimum requirement, the application will
use the available memory. Memory size alerts such as "Application prefers
1024K of memory, 900K is available, do you want to open using available
memory?" will not appear.

Closed applications quit automatically when more memory is needed
Users commonly get into into low memory situations by closing a document window
without quitting the application, since the application still remains in
memory. With the System 7 Tune-Up installed, the Finder offers to quit such
applications automatically to make enough memory available when opening another
application.

Automatic printing without quitting the application
If the user chooses "Print..." with background printing on, and not enough memory
is available to use PrintMonitor, System 7 Tune-Up will print the document
immediately, without making the user quit the application.

Reduced System Software memory consumption when AppleTalk is off
With Chooser 7.1 included with the System 7 Tune-Up, if the user turns off
AppleTalk with the Chooser and then restarts, AppleTalk networking code will
not be loaded into system memory. This frees up 100 to 125K of RAM, depending
on the Macintosh model. If AppleTalk is turned on again with the Chooser, the
user must restart to use networking services.

Reduced System Software memory fragmentation
As the user opens applications, desk accessories, and control panels, the
amount of memory used by System Software increases. Problems in the System 7.0
and 7.0.1 Memory and Process managers prevent some of that memory from being
released when those programs quit. System 7 Tune-Up fixes those problems, so
more memory is released when applications and desk accessories quit.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS

Faster LaserWriter performance when printing TrueType fonts
The LaserWriter driver version 7.1 is on average approximately 40% faster than
version 7.0. Under certain situations, lab testing has shown a performance
increase of up to 73%. The 7.1 driver does not download software or fonts to
the LaserWriter IIf, IIg, NT, and NTX if the software or fonts are already in
the printer's ROM. This speeds printing of both TrueType(TM) and Type 1 fonts.
It also does not download TrueType software and fonts to the LaserWriter and
LaserWriter Plus; it instead converts TrueType fonts to Type 1 format and
downloads those.

Faster StyleWriter performance
StyleWriter driver version 7.2.2 is nearly twice as fast as version 7.1, as it
has been rewritten based on the Personal LaserWriter LS driver rather than the
ImageWriter driver. Like LS users, therefore, StyleWriter users need the "MS
Word TrueType(TM) Printer Init" from Microsoft to print Microsoft Word documents
correctly on the StyleWriter printer.

Better font memory management
TrueType software uses an area of System Software memory to store the most
recently used font images. A problem with System 7.0 and 7.0.1 clears this
area out whenever any new file is opened. TrueType must then refill this
memory, slowing performance (especially when printing). With the System 7 Tune
Up, this memory area is cleared only when a new font file is opened, increasing
font performance in general and TrueType printing in particular.

Faster Chooser performance
The new Chooser is approximately 52% faster for device selection and 61% faster
for zone selection. Keyboard shortcuts in the Chooser also select devices more
quickly. Improvements are most noticeable in network zones with many devices.

Faster Finder copying of large files
System 7 Tuner 1.0 improves the performance of Finder "move" and "duplicate"
operations by up to 22% on files over 250K in size.

BUG FIXES

Reduced possibility of data corruption with shared files
A problem in System 7.0 and 7.0.1 makes it possible for files shared with File
Sharing to become corrupted when two or more users access the file
simultaneously. File Sharing Extension 7.0.2 fixes this problem.

Increased PrintMonitor Reliability
System 7 Tune-Up makes Print Monitor more reliable and much less prone to
crashes.

Bitmapped fonts in the System File marked as purgeable
System 7 Tune-Up allows the Font Manager to unload certain fonts in the System
7.0 System file from System Software memory when not in use.

Aliases to the Trash
System 7 Tune-Up fixes occasional strange behavior of aliases to the Trash.

SCSI Manager
With System 7.0 and 7.0.1, using serial communications devices during heavy
File Sharing activity can cause the SCSI bus to become confused and seem busy
when in fact the bus is free. This causes the computer to hang. System 7
Tune-Up fixes this problem.

Sleeping Keyboard
At startup, the System 7 Tune-Up repeatedly resets Apple Desktop Bus keyboards,
preventing a problem in which some keyboards sometimes failed to wake up. This
fix is included in 7.0.1 as well.

Subject: '030 Accelerators for the Mac Plus

On Thursday January 10 in v10 #8, Phil Jung asks about economical accelerators
for the Plus.

Just about a month ago I was pursuing the same information. The best bet seems
to a NewLife accelerator called the NewLife Plus, manufactured by a company
called (guess what!) NewLife Computer Corporation, which is located in my
(wide sense) backyard: 603 March Road, Kanata, Ontario, Canada, K2K 2M5.
(800) 663-6395 or (613) 592-5080, and FAX (613) 592-9738.

The NewLife Plus is a '030 board, available in a variety of clock speeds. It
boasts 4 SIMM sockets that accommodate either 1MB SIMMS or 4MB SIMMS, and a
32 bit data path. Its basic Canadian suggested retail price is $688. As with
other boards the accelerator can be clipped on or soldered. The basic kit comes
with a power supply augmentation arrangement and a fan. It sounds like a good
deal. Certainly it would bear further investigation!
I got this information from a fellow with first name Patrick, who, I got the
impression, would be more than happy to assist your investigations.

It is certainly my intention to purchase this board for my son's Plus very soon
after it starts shipping.

Hope this helps!

Subject: (A) More on AutoDoubler

Hiya!

Well, there still seems to be some question about AutoDoubler, so I'll
make a couple of observations:

1) All of its COMPRESSION is done in the background, when your
machine is IDLE. So, it doesn't even run as a background task and slow
your machine down...

2) The AD compression format is ASYMMETRICAL. It takes a long time to
compress a file (when it doesn't matter how long it takes), but not long
at all to decompress. I tried a large HyperCard stack, and it took
65 seconds to compress, but 5 seconds to decompress. (Savings was 55%,
BTW). Note also that you don't usually have to decompress a file, unless
you need to make changes to it. SO, your big files (usually your apps),
will never need to be decompressed to disk, and the times are even
faster, since there's not any save/verify I/O to the disk.

3) Somebody in the last digest mentioned that the reason AD doesn't
use the DoubleUP board is because of licensing problems with the
compression chip. If that's the case, could somebody please tell me the
number of the chip's company, so that I can call and scream at the top
of my lungs for several hours? 1/8 :-)

(A) Using More of your Hard Disk..... and disappearing folders

The Apple HD SC SetUp application that formats your hard disk automatically
rounds down the partition it assigns as the "maximum". For example on a
nominal 40 MB apple disk, it would assign 32K to the partition map, 16K to
the driver, and 40 MB to the Mac-HFS partition available to the user, leaving
typically 1 MB unused. This unused space, which can be 2 MB on an 80 MB disk
and even more on larger disks, can in fact be used if you reformat the disk.

First backup your hard disk completely since all data will be lost. Then boot
with the system floppy containing "Apple HD SC SetUp", and run this application.
Click on "Partition" and then on the Mac-HFS partition to select it, and delete
it. Then create a "custom" Mac-HFS partition using the real maximum size
(about 41 MB). Finally, click on "Update" to update the driver. You must do
this anyway if you switch to system 7.

****** WARNING ******
You should then RE-FORMAT your hard disk. Failure to do this may lead to the
mysterious 'disappearing folders' reported by Wade Williams and others including
myself. In both these cases the partition had been extended with HD-SC 7.

In my case, Norton DD reported that this problem was because:
>A part of the disk's directory was found to contain some invalid information.
>(fLink loop at node #643).

Apple France also suggested that the problem could be because the disk may
have been formatted as shipped with a US system-7 incompatible formatter ???

(Q) Fonts: Apple vs Adobe
A couple of years ago, I purchased the Adobe screen fonts for Laserwriter and
Laserwriter Plus, mostly for the bold, italic, and bold-italic fonts but also
because I had read that the Adobe screen fonts corresponded more closely to
Postscript output than the screen fonts Apple shipped with their system
software. (These were run through the Suitcase Font Harmony utility.) Now I
have a Powerbook which requires System 7 (still running 6.05 at work). I
recently got Suitcase 2.0 and started moving fonts out of System 7 into
separate suitcase files. At that point, I noticed that the screen fonts which
came with System 7 did not include the bold, italic, etc. versions. My question
is, should I replace the Apple screen fonts with the Adobe versions? How well
will the Adobe screen fonts match Truetype output? On a related note, should
changing system versions (say 6.03 to 6.05 or 6.07) change pagination in Word
if exactly the same screen fonts (Adobe) are used for the different systems?
What about same system and fonts on a Plus versus an SE. Any insight would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: CTB modem tool does not support RTS/CTS ??

Over the past few months several readers have mentioned that
the Apple Hayes Modem Cable is not wired to support hardware
flow control. That is, the RTS and CTS modem control signals
are not wired through. This is unfortunate since hardware flow
control is desirable for use with high speed modems
(V.32bis/V.42bis modems).

One reader suggested configuring the high speed modem and the
Mac to support XON/XOFF flow control. This works okay as long
as you don't need to run fully transparent applications (e.g.,
SLIP-based applications).

Another reader mentioned that he had ordered a new cable with
the hardware flow control signals wired through from a company
called Dartek (1-800-832-7835) for $19.95 plus shipping.

There may be yet another problem. I noticed that the Apple
Communications ToolBox serial tool supports either XON/XOFF
flow control or RTS/CTS flow control, *but* the Apple modem
tool only supports XON/XOFF flow control. I'm running system 7
and the 1.0.2 Apple modem tool.

Subject: disappearing files/folders

I too, have seen the disappearing file/folder problem.

A student just purchased an LC, and of course half the students in the
dorm came over and start loading his 80MB drive with every public
domain, shareware, and commerciial package they have. Well he's using
INITs (excuse me, extensions) and CDEVs from all kinds of sources, has
both Eradicate 'em AND Disinfectant INIT installed, after, of course
someone has run Disinfectant and discovered a version of NVIR already
infecting several applications. QuickTime was NOT one of the extensions
used.

Well about 9:00 that evening I got a phone call at home. This problem
was just about as noted by wa...@ducvax.auburn.edu in Info-mac digest
Vol. 10, No 8: a "FIND" could locate documents and/or applications, and
once found they would be visible, but on closing a folder;s window, the
folder and all its contents would disappear. Not only that, but
sometimes on closing a non-invisible folder, suddenly the expanded view
of the hierarchy of all folders and applications would suddenly appear!

I, too, was skeptical, and invited the student to bring his computer by
my office the next day, where I used my monitor, keyboard, and mouse
>From my SI with his LC.

His phone description was correct., and I am sure he got tired of my
saying "I have never heard of or seen anything quite like this."

The only disk tool I had available was Disk First Aid, which gave the
message "unable to verify status of disk," a message that I usually
interpret for floppies as a damaged sector in the directectory/boot
block area (this is just a guess on my part, I must admit.)

We started from a floppy using System 6.0.7. No change. I wish that I
could have used DiskTop's find file to see what it would do, but with
that unavailable, I could not even find the invisible files/folders. We
managed to delete his System 7 folder, installed System 6.0.7 on his
hard drive (by dragging, not using the install program) and restarted.
The System Folder was invisible! Finally out of desperation I
recommended that he reinitialize his drive and reinstall his System
Software. He called me later that night saying that all was working
fine.

The one thing I believe he learned out of all this, was when I trashed
several pirated commercial utilities (such as an early version of
Suitcase) stating that "even more recent versions of this are known to
have difficulties with System 7) was that "I guess I had better be a
little careful of 1) what I let people put on my hard drive and 2) the
versions of software I use!"

You'd better believe it!!!

I've been using the DoubleUp card for about 6 months now, and have found it
to be very fast and reliable. Once in a while, due perhaps to some
collision
of interrupts, the board complains and reverts to the software compression
algorithm, but I just tell it (through the 'DD' Finder menu) to go back
to using the board, and everything is happy. Salient Software is now
marketting AutoDoubler, which is more on the lines of the DOS packages;
I've ordered it and will see if it's really OK. AutoDoubler is pure
software and does not use the card, but they claim it is just as fast; I
am skeptical, but will soon know for sure.

The automatic compression stuff cannot of course really double your disk
capacity, for a couple of reasons. With the DoubleUp board, when I open
an application, it is decompressed along with everything in its folder
that has the same creator; if, however, the application uses stuff in
subfolders (as many do), *that* stuff is not decompressed. Perhaps
AutoDoubler will answer this issue, but even so, do you want to be
compressing and decompressing several megabytes of data every time you
enter and leave an application? Of course, if the bulk of your storage is
in documents created by the application, then you can gain a lot by keeping
all the documents compressed.
Another problem is with opening files from within an application;
supposedly they will be automatically decompressed, but I don't that
always works smoothly, if at all. (Sorry, I should be more specific,
but I don't have the time just now for a detailed experiment.)

So far, I'm happy with this stuff. It should enable me to survive with
my existing hard disk for quite a while longer, before I have to go beg
my boss for an expensive new disk.

Autodoubler is wicked FAST. Yes! on a Macintosh! Lloyd Chambers has done a

support files (Ohh... say Microsoft Word 5.0) The decompression time is only
seconds off the decompressed version - on any machine (yes... even the

cry for help. I wrote in vol 9 or 10 ( sorry the mind is gone)
that My stack InfoBrowser 1.0.1 (/info-mac/card/infobrowser-101.hqx)
was having problems, it seems that a particular script which had
been working fine for a week had just died, and stopped working.
Well it seems, this is pretty definite, that the script had memory
troubles when it attempted to read in a a text line that was over 600 chars
in lkength. The stack could not handle this so it graciously stopped the
script, but it did not leave any error messages. Well when it left
the script it also corrupted my copy of the stack (well, I did
attempt to make it read the info about 20 times, eventually it just died.).
Well I have an older copy of the stack which works fine. I also
will include a script in the future that checks line length, and gracefully
quits. If you download the stack (and I hope that you all do) please keep
a backup of it and if it quits in the midddle of a script adjust the line
lengths of the text file. This should not keep occuring, but since
the machine is being switched, it seems that some things are getting through
the moderators (that is not a criticism of the moderators!!)
thanks again

If you would like to be able to start-up a non-Mac machine with the power
button, buy a PowerKey. This is a surge suppressor that you plug you Mac,
and any other things you want to turn on with the Mac. When you want to
start up, simply push the triangle button (power button). When you select
shutdown from the special menu, the omputer and all the other devices
plugged into the PowerKey turn off automatically.

The PowerKey can be set to turn itself on at a pre-set time, and with QuicKeys
Lite (which is bundled for free) you can turn off the computer automatically.
PowerKey is made by Sophisticated circuits and can be found at all the major
mail order houses for around $70.

Subject: Mac Income Tax Programs

Well, I received a reasonable number of replies to my question about tax
preparation programs. Many people used Mac In Tax for the past several
years. It is (supposedly, which I guess means list price) in the $70 price
range
in the mail order houses and is well worth the money. I found these
typical prices: MacConnection $59, MacZone $61, MacWarehouse $59,
Mac'sPlace $59, and DrMac $56. The best value package I found was from
ChipSoft which has a special deal: a copy of MacInTax and a "free" copy of
Norton Utilities for $79 (which appears to be 1991 tax year list price).
Mail Address for MacInTax: ChipSoft, Inc., 6330 Nancy Ridge Drive, Suite
103, San Diego, CA 92121-2246. Phone number is (800) 487-8297

The greatest capability of this type program is the ability to do "what
if" calculations quickly and easily. Also, Mac In Tax has help files
available at the click of the mouse. It supports nearly all IRS forms
and you can print the forms and send them directly to the IRS. There is a
complete manual but it is rarely needed since most of the actions are
intuitive in nature. Another reader commented "MacInTax will import stuff
>From Quicken and other General Ledger type systems. Not useful to me, but
my friends like it."

Other comments combined into this paragraph included: I just purchased
MacInTax '91 (after using it in 1990). I'm very happy with it. It took
about an hour to complete a 1040 so that I have an estimate of what my
return will look like (still waiting for W-2's 109*'s etc.). If you do the
1040EZ then you probalby don't need any Tax program as it wont save you
much time if any.

No one strongly endorced the state tax packages. Then too, i don't recall
a reply from California which used to have a lengthly state tax form. Some
state tax forms (were reportedly) not available until April last year.

Some people remembered TurboTax, but Chipsoft bought the company and that
product is no longer sold, current, etc.

One reader noted that Heizer Software usually distributes a set of Excel
Templates. I am not sure about this year. They usually charge $35.

Only 93 more procrastinating days until Federal Income Taxes are again
due.

There was also one recommendation for using Managing Your Money, and the
output from MYM can be read directly by MacInTax. This make tax
preparation almost "automatic"...

Standard caveat: I have no relation with any firm selling Mac compatible
products, any relationship with any such firm, etc. My only relationship
is as an annual sponsor of the Internal Revenue Service.

I'm looking for newer software to use with my scanner.

I'm using a MacScan page scanner interface between my Mac II (sys 7) and a
Cannon page scanner. This is a box which enables me to connect the Cannon page
scanner (which does not have a SCSI port) to the Mac SCSI bus.

This was purchased 2nd hand and is quite old. The manual is dated 4-5-88!!
The software is version 1.21.

I tried to contact the manufacturer, New Image Technology, Inc, without
success. The phone number (301-731-2000) has no answer, and information
in that area (301-555-1212) does not find any organization with their name.
The address in the manual is 9701 Philadelphia Court, Lanham, Maryland 20706.
I suspect that they have gone out of business.

The software does work, feeble though it is. I have had some problems
converting scanned images to other formats, like SuperPaint and TIFF formats.

Has anyone heard of this software?

Has anyone heard of this organization?

Is there a newer version of the scanning software out there?

Is there any OTHER scanning software that might work with this setup?

Well... you can't attach an external monitor to a Classic II, which is why
I don't think I would ever buy one.

Hear hear... I recently advised some administrative support people to save
some money and get LC's with monochrome monitors instead of the IIsi's
they were considering. They saved money and got Macs that will do the job
they want of them. The few people they have who crunch numbers can now get
better machines because of the money they saved.
A lot of people look down on the LC but it is a good machine if you put it
to the right use. I had one for a job over the summer that I used for
simple spreadsheet work and word processing. I used it with a 13" hi-res
color monitor and a 12" monochrome. Both monitors made it possible to view
the entire width of documents I was editing and that is what mattered. The
color was a nice bonus though.
A nice fast '030 can be a real nice thing when you are in a hurry but the
antiquated '020 can still do the job for most simple microcomputer tasks.

P.S. I must add that to install an FKey, you do not need to put ResEdit on

have to do is boot from a System-6 floppy (such as the Disk tools/800k) and
option-click on the FKey file, which will force ResEdit to use the boot system

Hi. I have a Mac LC loaded with 10 MB and a GCC WriteMove printer. I use the
Mac mainly for word processing. After installing System 7, I began to
experience some weird symptoms.
In MS Word 4:
the Mac would switch to all capital letters, hitting the Shift key would
restore normality;
some letters would not register;
all of a sudden some letter would keep appearing as if the key were stuck;
Mouse would move very slowly and erratically.

When trying to use the modem port for communication:
some noise would keep loading the line and eventually the Mouse and the system
would freeze.

And generally, the Mac would stop responding to commands, especially to the
Quit command and would need to be rebooted.

I tried various things: reformatting the disk, checking for viruses,
re-installing all my software, etc. Now, I suspect the original GCC printer
software because the system seems to be working fine until I install the
printer driver and spooler and reboot.
Has anyone seen similar problems? Thanks for any help.
