Hi all,

I'm looking for a database management system for the mac. I do know just
the filemaker software. Is there anything else?

Thanks,

cd

Numerous flavors of SQL-- MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, etc.

State your requirements a little more specifically. MySQL, et al, _are_
stand-alone database systems, in that they do not rely on the presence
of other tools/utilities/whatever to run.

Two main options on the Mac, FileMaker and 4th Dimension.

FileMaker 9 just came out, with a nice set of enchancements,
especially the
addition of SQL/ODBC functionality. http://www.filemaker.com

4th Dimension is about to undergo a major release, you can find out
what may be
coming at the upcoming conference http://4d.com/summit/sessions.html

Hi,

You might consider Runtime Revolution. It lets you create your
own interface and connects to a number of databases, such as
MySQL, SQLite, MS SQL, and ODBC-driven databases. You could also
create your own database and keep your data in files, either
local or on e.g. an FTP server. Or anything else you can think of...

FileMaker
4D
Omnis Studio is still out there
Helix (but migration to OS X/UB has stalled?)
iList / iList Studio
Runtime Revolution (SQLite, MySQL, etc.)
REALbasic (SQLite support; Pro includes ODBC drivers)

I'm sure there are many more, but those are the ones that come to mind.
REALbasic is okay for someone coming from an Access (VBA) or VB
background. 4D is still a great tool, but takes some time to learn.
Revolution is interesting, especially if you like AppleScript instead of
a flavor of "BASIC" (as if RB is BASIC).

I wish Helix were updated. Was cool in its time.

I would check www.macscience.net and more specifically,
http://www.macscience.net/MacScience/Databases.html for an exhaustive
list of options.
