When I'm listening to an online radio station and then go do something else
my computer goes to sleep as it's set to. The monitor goes black but the
radio keeps playing. I mean I like it yet I always figured that sleep mode
turned everything off?

The screen saver typically has two stages of "saver image" and "monitor in
sleep mode" so the monitor may well enter sleep mode before the processor.
When the radio is playing there will be no GUI action so the monitor can
be screen saved even while the processor is busy (1% of the time)
playing music.
It is so you can donate cylces to finding ETs or large primes or whatever.

That sounds like display sleep, not computer sleep. Check your energy
settings preference.
