As painful as it is, seeing a great technology abandoned, I'm still
finding Cyberdog preferable to the alternatives, with just a few problems.
One of those problems is Java. I have no idea how or even if Java works
with Cyberdog. Can anybody tell if it does, and if so how to do it?

You need to use MRJ. In the Cyberdog Prefs, select the option to use Java.

On a side note, I was using Cyberdog pretty heavily up until a few weeks
ago. Now I've decided to switch to Netscape Navigator 4.04 because
Cyberdog was increasingly crashing on various Web sites (mainly because of
JavaScript I suspect...the pooch does not support it.) At that time I
downloaded MRJ 2.0 and tried to use it with Cyberdog. I had a horrible
experience, severe crashes in Cyberdog, mainly from out of memory errors.
I did not feel like playing around with the memory settings to see if
these would cure this or not. I went back to using MRJ 1.5.1 and all
worked fine again. I had previously used MRJ 1.5.1 for many months with
Cyberdog with great success. Other Cyberdog users have reported similar
problems to mine, while others have had success with MRJ 2.0. As with many
computer problems, who can tell why stuff works for one person and not the
next.

So, I suggest you use MRJ 1.5.1 with Cyberdog. If you wish to play around
with memory settings, give 2.0 a try also. But, you will need to grab the
Apple Applet Viewer OpenDoc part from the 1.5.1 install if you haven't
been using that, because MRJ 2.0 does not include this part.

P.S. Oh yeah, if you don't have MRJ you can download it from:

I still find cyberdog the best solution for my internet requirements. CD
does work with java, you have to sleect enable java in prefs and have MRJ
installed. The tricky point is CD needs 'Apple Applet Viewer' and MRJ2.0
does not install it. So if you want to use MRJ2.0 you must install an
earlier MRJ, get the viewer, delete MRJ, re-install MRJ2.0, replace the
viewer. Apple is really kicking the dog with this obnoxious behavior. For
better answers to all CD questions go to
