I've been looking for a way to put my televison on my LAN, so that I can
stream stuff over the (gigabit) Ethernet from my Mac Pro. I keep coming
back to the Sony Playstation3, which costs about CDN $400 or less and,
aside from games, will play Blu-ray discs, DVs and CDs and will connect
to my big-screen tv via HDMI or component video. This seems to be too
good to be true.

Can I really put this thing on my LAN and stream DivX (say) to my LCD
tv? And play games with it in between? And rent Blu-ray movies and play
them? I bet it doesn't record ...

And yes, it's more expensive than Apple TV.

Thanks. It's on my wish-list. Gigabit Ethernet comes with it -- I could
probably stream 1080p (without looking up them specs).
