Does anyone know where I can find a robust share/freeware screen
saver?

It doesn't have to be fancy, just something that will work with mac IIs
and system 7.

Thanks,

Darkside of the Mac is free and robust, but takes up around 700K of disk if you
use all the different "faders". You can of course delete all of those and it
will just use a blank screen and will only use 38K.

There's also Moire, which is shareware, fee from from memory is around $25.

Both are available from the usual archive sites.

Darkside of the Mac is freeware. Similar to After Dark. Works with system 7
only. Avail. at sumex-aim.stanford.edu and ftp.apple.com. (I think)

I would also recommend Moire, as satisfying your selection criteria of
being simple and working with System 7. It gives you nice soothing
swirling abstract patterns on the screen, has configuration options for
speed, colour, pattern, etc, and I've been using it for two years on
various machines with no problems. All the other well know screen savers
are behemoths in comparison. The shareware fee is $10 Australian. (Well,
it was when I paid it for v3.22 in 1990.)

The current version of Darkside (3.11 I think) only works with System 7,
but Darkside 2.5 works just fine with System 6 and MultiFinder.

Is this true?? Does Darksise 2.5 work with system 6? I didn't think it
did. If it is true can some kind soul direct me to where I can locate a
copy?

Yes, I want to find Darkside 2.5 too. We still have a log of system 6 systems
running here and few screensavers as much fun as this one.

Andrew Welsh has just written a new screensaver called Eclipse. It is shareware
(I forget what he was asking for it) but it is a wonderful extension. It
monitors port activity much better than AfterDark does, and only uses up 5k of
memory when loaded. I got my copy from GEnie (I think) but I'm sure it will
make it to Sumex etc. soon (if it is not already there).

It is a sumex-aim now. Check ./cp/eclipse-10.hqx.

Sheesh, I'm not always right, but this one's pretty simple. YES, it works,
I've installed it many times on System 6 machines. I will post a copy of
Darkside 2.5 to comp.mac.binaries.

Whoops. Make that comp.binaries.mac. ;-)

On second thought, DarkSide 2.5 is too big to post in one piece and it's
too much of a pain to split (or is there an auto-splitter in nn that I
missed?).

So, for those System 6 users who want Darkside 2.5, send me email and I
will send you a copy.

You might also want to check out Eclipse v1.0 (it's at Sumex). Just came out
this past week. Simple. Inexpensive ($10?). Flashes the time on the screen
while sleeping. And most importantly, IT DOESN'T HOG PROCESSOR TIME. Give it
a try. /info-mac/cp/eclipse-10.hqx, I think.
