iPhoto '09 won't run now that I've gone back to 10.6. I've long since
gotten rid of my iLife 09 media. Now I need to be able to make a
website like that, or similar to that, from iPhoto and I'm not willing
to buy a current version of iLife to do it. Are there any apps out
there which can do this?

I just launched iWeb, but that doesn't seem to do quite the same thing.
Free would be good, or something not-too-expensive. And it's REQUIRED
that the product retain the order of the photos as given, unlike iPhoto
09.

Any chance you have Photoshop Elements? It can create a web page from
a folder of photos.

How many photos are we talking about? As Michael said, you could write
your own web code. Or find a page that does approximately what you want
and emulate its HTML.

I don't know if it can do the whole web site, but for the photo part,
take a look at jAlbum.

According to my (old) notes, it looks like I had to do a couple of
things to get it to work on my local Mac's Apache installation:

--

jAlbum notes

Projects are created in Documents/jAlbum stuff

After creating an album, rename the "album" folder inside the project
folder as desired, and copy it to Sites/photo_albums

All images must have an extension -- e.g. ".jpg"

Some ICC profiles are not acceptable -- Adobe 1998 is one; sRGB works.

Have you taken a look at JAlbum, or something like it?:

I have Photoshop CS5.

79 at the moment, but I've got three or four more trays of slides to
scan. I do this for each tray.

It's not a total matter of cost, though it is SOME or I'd get
Dreamweaver or similar. It's a matter of QUALITY, which iPhoto doesn't
have, and ability, and speed. Sure, I could write my own pages, but I'd
rather have it automated.

I move the generated iPhoto "site" to my hosting. I'd do the same with
anything new. Thanks.

Graphic Converter has a "Catalog (HTML for WWW usage)" option in the convert &
modify command which will build a simple web album, optionally with the filename
and/or IPTC caption beneath each image. But as far as I can see, it's always
sorted by filename, so you'd have to rename the files to control their order.

I've tried the Help, but it just seems to refer me to iPhoto. I've also
got Lightroom if that matters. These are full versions, not
"essentials".

That's good. iPhoto couldn't be trusted to do this. I'll see what GC
does. I've already got it. I've picked up jAlbum, and rather like it,
but there's a problem with images whose names contain double-quotes.
I've asked them about that. Meanwhile, I'll try these other methods.
Thanks.

I write my own, but I'm a seriously weird old lady with a simple web page

Which version of iPhoto are you looking for?

iPhoto?? Doesn't sound like you were searching Adobe's Help files.

Some years ago, Apple changed the Help function such that it no
longer defaults to the application you're currently using. Instead,
it performs a more general search on your Mac. However, the application
you're using will be the first one listed below the Search field.
Click on the name and that app's Help utility will open.

The specific app you want from CS5 is Adobe Bridge. Use the search
term "web photo gallery" from any app within CS5 and you'll get
the instructions. You may want to check the "Adobe reference only"
box within the Adobe Help window.

Here is the website URL for the information I was referring to
in Adobe Help:

http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/using/create-web-galleries-pdfs-adobe.html

I'm not. I've given up on Apple software other than its operating
system. Even there, I'm getting kind of dissatisfied.

Right now, I'm using Lightroom 4's web module. I expect that's the same
thing, no?

I've found that requiring it to "Use URL encoding" makes things work
MUCH better. For some reason, they don't automatically encode
characters like & and " and ?, making their HTML very fragile.

Interesting. I tried it a few years ago but haven't looked recently.

On the PHP + MySQL side I have heard good reports of Coppermine for this
sort of thing, but having said that I am trying to move to more static
sites. I might give JAlbum another whirl.
