I just want to split a video in half. Easy enough - use Duplicate, so I have two copies, then use Trim on each to trim down to the half I want to keep in each case.
Then I can't save. I can only Export - which will take like an hour and reprocess the entire thing.
Apparently, the solution is either use a full-blown video editing program (like iMovie, I suppose - which likely will still want me to "export" the result) - or to use Quicktime 7 which I still have, thankfully, from a system that I've had since long before Lion (and SL, which, IIRC, is what brought us this absurd QT X instead of the perfectly decent QT 7 and QT 7 Pro).
Any better suggestions than this?
(After some fiddling - I had to dig up my registration code from a while ago to unlock the QT7 "pro" features - QT7Pro worked just fine for this. C'mon, Apple - why take away perfectly obvious things which were working just fine before?)

nope. use quicktime player 7.

that's what they do.
quicktime x is basically a huge downgrade. you'd think after all these
years they could have put back the functionality they removed.

I don't know if it will help/work in Quicktime X or not, but "Save As" is making a return to at least some of the auto-saving apps in Mountain Lion -- albeit in a slightly hidden fashion:

Thanks, but no - Quicktime X not only doesn't have SaveAs but is missing Save entirely. You cannot save a file that you've modified at all. It only has Export - which re-encodes the entire thing and forces the export to one of the "approved" formats.
I simply wanted to take a file, trim it, save it. Quicktime X cannot do that. Which, as I said, is just absurdly goofy.
I was surprised, though, to see Duplicate -- which only makes sense if you have any intention of, you know, saving a file. If you have to Export it anyway, it's not like you could accidently Save it over the original.

That's what I ended up doing. QT7 was really slow, for whatever reason, to launch and open the files, but once they were open, the editing tools were perfectly decent (in fact, quite a bit more clear than those in QTX) and Save worked just fine.

Really annoying. I know I'm far from the only one who's not happy with QT X. I was starting to think I liked the new QT X interface - basically a frameless window with controls that appear and disappear when you move the mouse -- it's really "clean" -- but I'd forgotten how much better the, perhaps less pretty, interface on QT 7 is. Useful buttons and controls and the windowframe really isn't annoying at all.
But the real issue is functionality and Apple's really just dumped this one out.
The only justification I can figure - and it's self-serving for Apple, not the users, is that they want us using iMovie to modify files, not QT X. It's not clear why QT X even has the minimal editing tools it has - why give us "Trim" but not Save other than to tease us. Of course, it retains the various export and share options - great if I want to upload to YouTube, but useless if I just want to save the file.
Come to think of it, I didn't even try in iMovie. I'll take a look. I just assumed that it, too, would want to re-encode and export everything, since it's never been meant for the kind of ultra-simple operation I was trying to do. I'll go look.
QT7Pro really was the right answer for this should-be-trivial task.
I'm awfully glad it didn't break when I moved to Lion and I hope it keeps working on ML.

As a point of curousity, can you Duplicate it after modifying it?

Mine has Save As and that is not such a bad idea, not to overwrite the original and later regret it, you can always consciously dump the latter.
You can also Save for Web and do what you will with the saved resources, though some will find this a bit indirect.

So what I wanted to do is simply not part of QT X under Lion, but it's still there under Snow Leopard.

I concur. QuickTime Player X in Lion has no Save or Save As mechanism,
only Export (and Export for Web). Even if you Duplicate a file (giving
an Untitled window) and trim it, then close the new window, it asks if
you want to save, but it actually does an export (with probable
re-encoding of the video).

Nope. Under Lion, if I simply tried to close the window, it brought up the Export window for the changed file.

I guess QT stop at 10.0 for SL? I am just thinking that if it is ever offered as an update, maybe best not to take up the offer. Actually, I use QT player 7 quite a bit more not just because it is quick and dirty for editing but for the really necessary feature of being able to have a presentation mode for movies and you get to be able to choose the size you want, entirely absent in 10. Wonder if it is present in 10.1?

Quicktime 7 Pro is still available here: <http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3380Z/A>, and it costs thirty bucks. I believe it cost that when I first activated it a long time ago. It's out there from Apple but requires the cash. It works fine in Lion. I keep it in the Utilities folder, but I don't use it much anymore. It doesn't appear to conflict with current Quicktime at all. You do need the free player at the URL above.
I seem to remember that Apple had to pay for certain codecs, algorithms and whatever to implement Quicktime 7 Pro. That's where the user expense came from. Apparently, they're not paying for it now, and newer versions of Quicktime suffer the consequences, but Quicktime 7 Pro lives on.
On the other hand, I seem to remember lots of stuff.
