I have start adding ALBUM ARTWORK so that the ITunes Views enables me
to see the Album artwork. I am trying to find out where the files for
this artwork are going to.
In anticipation of switching to another iMac, I would like to
understand a little more about where this data is stored.
1. Where is the Artwork stored.
2. How is the Artwork file associated with the music file. I have
observed that the ALBUM NAME plays a key role here as when the artwork
is added, all music files with the ALBUM name will show that artwork
3. Once I have located and backup up the artwork. How do I recover it
so that the artwork shows up for a particular music file. I keep my
music files on an external hard drive. These files are backed up to
DVD Media.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Which version of iTunes are you using? I believe earlier versions stored
the artwork in the music file itself.
However, iTunes 7 looks like it creates a "Album Artwork" folder in the
root of your iTunes library folder.
I would guess it maintains the associations between artwork and song
files in the iTunes Library file in the same folder, as the iTunes Music
LIbrary.xml file does not appear to have any information about album
artwork.

There seem indications that the Album Artwork folder is used so that
iTunes can get faster access to artwork for the CoverFlow display in
iTunes.
I was hoping that that this change would let me store artwork that I
could associate with PDF files, but no such luck. iTunes won't add
metadata to a PDF, and won't use Album Artwork either. (I index lots of
my PDF books and manuals in iTunes, since it provides convenient access
to them - double clicking opens them in Preview - but I wanted to add
book covers for CoverFlow).
