However, something happened yesterday evening that's made that
more difficult-- and the strange thing is that I don't know what might
have caused it!
I think my problem can best be illustrated by doing a before/after
contrast:
BEFORE: Whenever I'd select a song (i.e. clicking on it once with
the mouse), the image I'd already dragged in would display. (Or, if
there was no image yet, I'd see a little hyphenated square with a
message saying "Drag album artwork here". ) This would happen
regardless of what song was actually playing. In short, he artwork
displayed was determined by the song currently selected-- not by the
song currently playing
AFTER: This situation seems to have reversed. Now, iTunes only
displays the artwork for the song that is actually *playing*,
regardless of the song that was actually selected. Thus, if I
double-click on one song to play it, and then select another song, the
art work for the first song continues to display.
This is *very* inconvenient for a number of reasons, It especially
inconvenient when I want to *add* artwork to songs that don't yet have
it. Before, I could just batch-select all the songs on an album and
then drag the artwork into the box-- and that would take care of all
of
them. Now, however, I can't do that. Since the iTunes box only seems
to relate to the song that's playing (rather than to the songs
selected), I can only now drag-and-drop artwork into a song that's
currently playing! This means that if I rip an album with then tracks,
I have to start track one playing, drag and drop the artwork in, then
start track two playing, drag and drop, then shift to track three, drag
and drop, etc....
Obviously, I'd like things to go back to the way they used to be.
However, I have no idea how to accomplish that. This change just sort
of happened-- I didn't change any settings in iTunes or anything like
that.-- so I'm not sure how to reverse it.
As an experiment, I decided to have Software Updater update me from 4.0
to 4.01.... but that didn't change anything. It still only displays
the song that's actually playing and won't allow multiple
drag-and-drops of artwork any more. :-(
Any ideas as to what might have caused this or how I can go back to the
way things "used to be"?

Doh! I figured out what had happened! Above the artwork window,
there's a little panel that allows you to choose between "Now Playing"
or "Selected Song". I switched from one to the other, without ever
realizing how... or that there was such an option.
So, problem solved and explained.
Sorry for wasting anyone's time with this...

Click where it says "Now Playing" right above the artwork. That should
toggle you to "Selected Song".

Reverend Paul
Zorak: That lady mantis... wasn't really a lady.
Space Ghost: Not really a lady? Huh? Then she must have been... Wait!
You were digging on a dude?
Zorak: It's not what you think. Carl is part of a male mantis
resistance movement that intercedes at the moment when the
urge is the worst. He lured me back to his nest, where we ate
barbeque and talked sports until the urge had passed. He...
saved my life, and for that, I will always be grateful.
Space Ghost: What a remarkable story! I wonder who owns the movie rights.
Zorak: Ted Turner.

Click on the "Now playing" text to revert to "Selected Song" (and vice
versa).
