When I read an article in Thoth, it springs up a window with the thread
listed in the top pane, and the article in the bottom pane. Even though
this is read-only, the blinking cursor is in the article. I would like
to use the keyboard to change the focus to the top pane so that when I
hit the down arrow, Thoth selects a new article in the thread so I can
hit return and have that article fetched.

I've looked through the wealth of information provided in Thoth, but
that answer escapes me. Anybody know how I can do this from the
keyboard? One of the reasons I use Thoth is that my hands pretty much
never leave the keyboard for the mouse, making Thoth very fast for me.

Have you tried pressing the Tab key? Traditionally, that changes the
focus area of well-behaved applications.

And to switch between windows, you can use the Command-` shortcut.

What is wrong with pressing 'I' to get to the next article?

Okay, I tried tabbing while in the thread window with Jolly's article
in the lower pane, and nothing happened. The blinking cursor remained
in the article window right where it was before. Command-` does indeed
cycle among the windows, but doesn't get me from the article pane to
the thread pane.

Pressing "l" in the thread window with Jim's post in the lower pane
gives me a popup window that advises me the article has no references.

You can go to Preferences -> Newsreading and check the following:

Main Keyboard Shortcuts
Keypad Shortcuts
Spacebar Digest Shortcut

and then use the "I" or "N" keys (without the command key) or the 0 key
of the keypad to move to the next article. Using the space bar advances
one screen (or chunk) and then to next article when at the end of the
current message. Go to Help -> User Guide -> Part Fifteen: Shortcuts
for more information on more available shortcuts.

That does it. _Many_ thanks!
