Apple Announces Extensions to AppleTalk Product Family

Features include new protocols and products for remote
connectivity, server enhancements for large networks, and support
from additional networking vendors

DALLAS, Texas--October 14, 1991--Apple Computer, Inc. today, in
conjunction with the Networld trade show, announced enhancements to
its AppleTalk line of products, a new protocol for accessing
AppleTalk networks remotely, and additional networking vendors'
support for the AppleTalk protocols.
AppleTalk, Apple's local area network protocol suite, is built into
every Macintosh computer and networked LaserWriter printer and
provides users with easy access to network resources. AppleTalk
ensures resources are viewed in a consistent manner independent of
the computing platform on which the resources reside.
In booth No. 1682 at the Networld show, the company is showing
AppleShare Server 3.0, its latest version of server software which
provides enhancements for enterprise customers, and AppleTalk Remote
Access, its new product for dial-up access to AppleTalk networks.
AppleTalk Remote Access incorporates a new protocol called AppleTalk
Remote Access Protocol (ARAP). Like all of the AppleTalk protocols,
ARAP is an open protocol and specifications are available to third-
party developers.
Also at Networld, Apple said three additional networking vendors will
support AppleTalk in their networking products. IBM, Microsoft and
Banyan Systems will join a list of hardware and software suppliers
supporting standard connectivity for Macintosh personal computers
into their environments using the AppleTalk protocols.
In the past, Apple has licensed the AppleTalk protocols to such
companies as Go Corporation, Adobe Systems, Novell, Digital Equipment
Corporation, Farallon Computing, Miramar Systems, Asante
Technologies, Pacer Software and Tandem Computers.
"These extensions to the AppleTalk product family, coupled with the
new vendors' support for the AppleTalk protocols, give Macintosh
users access to an ever expanding world of computer networking--from
remote network access by the individual to global connectivity within
an enterprise," said Jim Groff, Apple's director of marketing for
the Enterprise Systems Division.

AppleShare Server 3.0 for Enterprise Customers
AppleShare Server 3.0 is a new version of Apple's server software for
the Macintosh that meets the security, performance and multitasking
requirements of larger workgroups and departments within enterprises.
AppleShare now provides access to centralized shared storage for up
to 120 concurrent users and queued access for up to five network
printers.
In addition, because AppleShare Server 3.0 supports the multitasking
feature of System 7.0, a Macintosh can run AppleShare simultaneously
with other server software and applications, such as database servers
and communication servers. AppleShare Server 3.0 also has open
Application Program Interfaces (APIs) to allow third-parties to
extend the AppleShare server's capabilities by offering such
enhancements as server backup and accounting packages running on the
same Macintosh server.
AppleShare Server 3.0 continues to feature easy installation and
administration, and now has increased password protection, server
administrator messaging, application launch-count control, copy
protection and print spooling.

AppleTalk Remote Access for Dial-up Connections
AppleTalk Remote Access software enables individuals using a
Macintosh computer running System 7.0 to gain access to all their
AppleTalk network resources from any location using modems and
standard telephone lines. Using AppleTalk Remote Access,
individuals can access file servers, send and receive electronic mail
messages, communicate with host computers and print to network
printers--all as if they were attached locally to the AppleTalk
network. AppleTalk Remote Access can also be used to connect to any
other Macintosh computer running System 7.0, and once connected, use
the file-sharing feature of System 7.0 to access the remote
computer's files.
The new product includes dial-out and answering service in a single
program, five levels of security to protect against unauthorized
access, and optimized performance using a variety of modems.
Support for many popular modems comes with the AppleTalk Remote
Access product, including those from Apple Computer, Telebit, Hayes
Microcomputer Products, US Robotics and Microcom. Support for other
modems will be made available as modem companies develop the
AppleTalk Remote Access "modem scripts" for their modems.
The ARAP specifications are available to third-party developers to
create products compatible with the new protocol. Several vendors,
including Cisco Systems, Novell, Shiva Corporation, Farallon
Computing, Cayman Systems, Transware, Computer Methods and Access
Privilege will be supporting this new protocol in their future
products.

Price and Availability
AppleShare Server 3.0 will be available in December 1991 in the
United States from Apple authorized resellers for a manufacturer's
suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1199 U.S. Owners of AppleShare
File Server 2.0 can upgrade to version 3.0 for $299 U.S. Owners of
version 2.0 file server and print server can upgrade for $199 U.S.
AppleTalk Remote Access is available immediately from Apple
authorized resellers in the United States for a MSRP of $199 U.S.
Individuals or organizations interested in creating their own "modem
scripts" for AppleTalk Remote Access may purchase the "AppleTalk
Remote Access Modem Tooklkit" for $25 through APDA, Apple's source
for developer tools. Developers interested in the ARAP
specifications may purchase the "AppleTalk Remote Access Developers
Toolkit," which retails for $30 U.S. and is also available through
APDA. For ordering information, contact APDA at (800) 282-2732 in
