http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-more-than-100-million-windows-8-licenses-sold-7000014957/

"Microsoft officials said on May 6 that Microsoft has surpassed the 100
million Windows 8 licenses sold milestone -- a number on par with the
number of Windows 7 licenses the company sold in its first six months on
the market."

Do I care? Not really. I use Windows 8 because it's far superior to OSX
in every way. But for the Branch Davidians, seems that market share and
profits are a better metric for quality, unless, their cult HQ is
bleeding red ink like a stuck pig at the precise moment when they'll be
switching to the argument that quantity=/=quality.

The Mac should have went the way of the Amiga. At this point, it's more
of an item purchased for bragging rights than functionality.

One of the things I enjoy about my setup is the ease of printing to my
laser printers. Another is the speed of Lightroom that is an order of
magnitude faster than that overbloated POS Aperture.

More to come in terms of usability.

Hahaha! This is what your entire LIFE hinges on nowadays - Windows sales
numbers. Wow, you're really living it up!

Nashton, I realize you feel you have to justify your purchase, but you
don't really have to. Buy what you like. Nobody really gives a hoot.
What your posts show is a massive inferiority complex.

Nashton, you keep bigging up windows 8 like you expect people to
believe your serious m8.

And what microsoft didnt say of that 100million was how many people
after having win 8 forced upon them enquired about downgrading to
windows 7.

Windows 8 is a vista for microsoft, nobody really likes it and most
windows users are sticking with windows 7.

I like your comparison of mac to the amiga.

Amiga was one of the coolest computers ever to exist. That was back in
a time when computers were used for fun.

then microsoft threw it's weight around and the rest is history.

I still have my Amiga A500 in storage, it was amazing to use and the
software library was massive.

Were lucky today that The Mac is alive and kicking to provide fun
computing for us again.

Now, ease of use printing to laser printers?

you add the printer to your comp and print.

Every computer offers that facility, how can it be easier?

I am not into photography so i cant comment on aperture but the guy
below explained it for me and revealed you are talking a load of
bollocks.

So you're an old Amigahead too, eh? Me too! Although a few years
ago, I finally did part with my (AdSpeed accelerated) Amiga 1000 after
selling all my other Amiga gear 15 years ago.

And one can turn older PPC based Macs into Amigas (sort of). :)

Loved my amiga, always wanted to upgrade to the 1000 and above series
but did not have the money at that time.
Used to attend a computer club on a friday night every 2 weeks, mainly
amiga owners. Bootleg software was being shared between all and those
times were good fun.

Yea, im sure someone has converted it seeing as was the same processor.
I think part of my liking for mac is i see a little of the Amiga spirit
in it.

Actually, the Amigatized Macs were what I was talking about. The
older PPC Macs could run later versions of AmigaOS, but the classic
Amiga never actually moved beyond 680x0. Nevertheless, although the
Amiga nad Mac shared a commonality in a windowing UI (WIMP), there is
where any similarity ended. The classic Mac was a task switcher - the
classic Amiga was a truly preemptive, multithreaded multitasker.

The Mac had color gfx, but only after adding in what was already built
into the Amiga. The Mac's cpu handled everything whereas the Amiga
had dedicated coprocessor hardware to offload gfx, sound, animation,
and ports. The Amiga had a dedicated accelerator slot to upgrade the
CPU, and had >two< internal expansion buses/set of slots (Amiga/ZORRO
expansion as well as ISA PC/AT slots) which allowed the use of an x86
'bridgeboard' (an SBC type device) so as to be able to run AmigaOS and
MS/DOS apps simultaneously.

The Amiga's 'spirit' was rather different than the Macs - more
different than they were similar. While the Amiga employed a WIMP
interface centered on a Workbench/drawers/tools/projects metaphor, the
Mac employed a desktop interface centered on files/folders. The
filesystems were also markedly different as was the UI. Macs confined
one to the wimp interface while in Amigaland, one copuld dynamically
bounce between Workbench/GUI mode, or a UNIX like command line
interface (AmigaShell) *years* before the OS-X went all UNIX-y...:)

Lets see where to start....and yes I was around Usenet during the great Amiga vs. Mac wars.

1. The MacOS supported color as of 1987 - only two years after the first Amiga was introduced.

2. The Mac also had dedicated hardware for graphics and sound. In fact, the first Mac that supported color didn't come with integrated graphics at all - you had to buy a separate card.

3. Amigas ports were much slower than Nubus.

4. Many Macs had a dedicated "processor direct slot" and there were plenty of accelerators for classics Macs. I bought one for my LCII

5. Some Macs had dedicated hardware for ports - ie the IIFX had dedicated 65C02 processors for the serial ports.

6. There were also Nubus x86 cards for 680x0 macs.
