Hope someone can provide some advice here ...

Don't ask how but some soapy water got through the edge of my lcd screen,
and into the actual lcd screen - maybe between the lamp and tft module ?!

In any case there's no damaga like bad pixels or lines, but I can see some
smudges inside the screen which are now a day old and probably won't dry.
-- cosidering it was soapy water :-))

Is my best bet taking the lcd out and cleaning it in distilled water then?
:-|

The smudges are as if someone was touching the screen with dirty
fingers yet they are inside .. Help!

Hi Martin

Liquid Crystal Diplays (LCDs) are sealed units- if they were not, the liquid
would leak out. That seal should keep out the water. I supose it's
possible your soapy water got behind the glass sandwich and is visible
there. Hopefully it won't cause a short circuit or worse.

But- what you describe sounds the same as a cracked LCD. Cracked panels have
liquid flowing around under the outer plastic screen. Turn off the computer
and look closely at the panel with a bright light. If you see a spider web
or a several fan shaped lines, the panel is broken.

This is the biggest problem of laptops. If you are lucky enough to find a
cheap replacement panel, and the laptop is nearly new, it could be worth
fixing.

If the laptop is a year old, with a broken panel, it's time for a new one.

Hi Nunyo!

Thanks for your advice,

Well the screen is not broken, since it still works fine (only 1 dead pixel)
and it almost looks like the water got into the lcd itself since I can see
3 distinct layers where the water is, 1 above the light, the other forms
faint horizontal lines and another faint vertical lines !?!

Since it was water with soap, I went bought some distilled water and
gave the whole screen a good bath (lol) and now the water went everywhere,
then I left it off for a day and now turned it on and it still works !!
(I can see more blobs of water but maybe that cleaered the soap and will
dry)

In any case, is this making sense? How could it get inside the LCD unit ??
Do TFT laptop displays still have liquid inside or are they dry units now?

Thanks for any info whatsoever!

Martin,

The are a lot of LCD's avail on eBay. Most(IBM's for example) run about
$100-$150. And replacing them (IBM) are easy... I've done a lot of 600's 760's
and 770's. If you have another brand(mfgr), just search eBay for your
type/model and see what the LCD's are going for($$). IF you're lucky enuff to
have an IBM model, IBM provides a Hardware Maint. manual(.pdf) which describes
total disassembly of their models for replacement...

Water got in between the LCD glass sandwich (which is sealed) and the
light diffuser that spreads the light over the back of the LCD. The
LCD module itself is not sealed. Officially your LCD is a write-off,
of course, but if it was mine I would take it apart completely (this
includes disassembling the module, usually held together with bent
metal tabs, sometimes screws), cleaning all components with a damp
paper towel, then laying them on dry paper towels to air-dry. I'd then
use "compressed air in a can" to blow dust and moisture out while
reassembling.
