Ticking hard drive

Hi!

Just purchased a sealed Hitachi 60GB/5400RPM hard drive for my Thinkpad T23
from eBay. Seems to be working fine, but it makes a rather loud ticking
sound every now and then (seems to be during brief disk accesses). My
previous drive, a 20GB/4200rpm (also Hitachi) did not have this. Is this
normal? Anything to worry about?

Searching other forums I've read about someone who was able to fix this
problem with a firmware upgrade from the IBM website, on this page:

However, the file I would need (to upgrade my version 53 firmware to version
55), the 12th diskette image file 'fwhd3012.exe', is no longer available...
:( Does anyone has a copy of this file for me? Would be highly appreciated!

I would wait until next week and check again for the file. It was up there
earlier this week and if they've taken it down already it probably means
there was a problem with it.

There is an updated page on the IBM site, in which they say they've deleted
the fwhd3012.exe file because it contained obsolete information and no
firmware upgrade is necessary for my type of harddisk. But this seems to be
untrue, as my firmware is version a53a and IBM's was a55a... (my drive is
dated NOV-03 by the way)... So I'm afraid they're not going to put it back
up again. I've e-mailed IBM tech support - fingers crossed...

I think the ticking noise is normal. I have a Hitachi 5400RPM drive (40GB),
and it ticks every now and then (don't know why), and makes the same sort of
noise when it's reading or writing information. Slower drives can work
quieter, but maybe 5400rpm can't.

Had that problem on my EvoN410c with a Hitachi 30Gb 4200rpm drive. I
called Compaq, told them what the problem was and they sent me a
replacement hdd right away. I don't know if this indicates there may be
a problem with the drive, but Compaq did not ask me any questions.

In any case, that ticking was extremely annoying, and the replacement
Toshiba 30Gb 4200rpm drive is much quieter, and it never ticks.

Did this file turn up for you?

I have the same drive and IBM released a A5BA version that has:

a) made recovery from their predesktop partition unavailable
b) made the restore CD's that they've sent me completely fail
c) made the predesktop partition completely unrecoverable, cheating me
out of 6GB on my 60GB drive.

I'd like to roll back to A55A but as previously posted, the diskette
image is gone. I too have an email into IBM (and Hitachi) but I
wondered if someone else had the file and could shoot it over to me.
