I'm looking to buy a high-end laptop to run linux and X on.
Unfortunately the Dell tech-spec sheet they faxed me just says they
use "western digital 32 bit accelerated local bus controller", no
specifics. Sigh.

It's the WD90C24. I hope that helps.

In this isolated instance these are indeed the opinions of my
employer. ;-)
I really like the system alot, and the linux installation was realatively
easy. If you buy one I'll send you my xconfig file.
I have had a couple problems however....
1. DELLs suspend to disk seems to be DOS/WINDOZE based. When I tried to
suspend to disk from linux the system locked up and now WINDOZE complains
that it's swap file is trashed.
2. I've been unable (in my very limited attempts) to get linux to recognize
the DELL port replicators SCSI or ethernet chips.
Never-the-less the unit is very nice. I would recommend it without resevation
for a DOS user.
1. The Lith-Ion battery really is a notch above.
2. The track-ball & buttons are the best I've used & I've tried a few.
3. The video is fast and clean (if a little faded looking.)
4. The port covers work great, and the power switch is excellent.
I expect the port replicator chipsets will be supported soon, if they're not
already.
The suspend to disk problem we may be stuck with.
Good Luck

I don't use linux on my XP/75, but I can say that I don't use
suspend-to-disk all that often either. The fact of the matter is, you
caould probably leave the computer in regular suspend mode for days (i
generally see a 1% or less per hour drop in battery life while the
unit is suspended). I generally dont turn the thing off -- I just leave
it suspended when im not using it and leave it plugged in at night.
After all, you did pay extra for that Li-ion battery, which supposedly
has no memory.
