What CD-ROM goes into the TP570 Ultrabase?

I thought a CD-ROM (or any other bay device) that goes into the Thinkpad
600 series fits in the Ultrabase as well. It turns out that the unit
(e.g., 05k8873) has a plastic lip which makes it impossible to fully
insert into the Ultrabay. Otherwise it looks compatible, as if all

Does someone know what CD-ROM fits?

Thanks,
Robert

Just remove the plastic lip. It slides off

Thanks! The problem is it does not come off. I pushed it quite hard
laterally in both directions, and in-out too. Can you give some more hints?

I realized it's the entire U-shaped plastic frame that needs to go. I
loosened screws and it came off in one piece. It seems to work OK,
though now there is a ~4mm gap between the CD-ROM and the bottom of the
Ultrabase bay.

Thanks for the advice, Bruce!

Turn the Ultraslimbay drive housing over and on the front bottom edge of the
unit you'll see a single screw securing a drive spacer. Remove this and then
slide the spacer towards the rear of the drive. The spacer is held on by two
dovetail joints, but will slide off easily.

Do NOT use the drive in your unit without the housing. Allowing the drive to
flop around in the port will lead to early failure of the connecter.

James

Thanks for the advice. My unit must be of a slightly different type -
the plastic lip is molded together (no joints) as one piece with two
thin (one mm thick) plastic "guides" that run on both sides of the
drive. Thus the only way to remove the lip is by loosening the four
screws on the side. There is no single screw at the place you describe.

There was a small piece of metal acting as a spring, located between the
metal drive housing and one of the guides, but even without that, the
drive does not move around in the bay. The gap I described is only at
the front - the thickness of the drive fills the bay entirely. I guess
it is possible to saw the thin plastic guards off of the lip and screw
them back on the sides, but it does not seem necessary, as if the only
purpose of the guards would be to hold the lip. I am satisfied with it,
and believe it is just another type of lip attachment.

Thanks again for the help.

What's the FRU or ASM P/N for this unit? Should be on a white label on the
top rear of the unit.

Is this the standard IBM 24X CD drive? Look on the bottom for the
manufacturer's label, should be a Toshiba 1902B.

I've got stacks of Ultraslimbay accessories to hand (as does Bruce) and the
_only_ devices that have the solid molded housing are the 2nd battery
adaptor, floppy drive, LS-120 drive and the Zip drive. All of the 2nd HDD
adaptors, CD and DVD drives for the Ultraslimbay have the removable spacer
on the bottom front of the drive to enable them to be used in the 570/E
Ultrabase.

According to your description of removing the housing, you've also removed
the catch that engages the locking mechanism for the Ultrabase bay. Be
careful the drive doesn't fall out when you're moving the unit.

FRU P/N 05K8873
ASM P/N 05K8803

Yes, the top front says IBM 24x. It was advertised as a CD-ROM for the
600 series:

It says:
Toshiba CD-ROM DRIVE
MODEL NO. XM-1702B

Manufactured JUNE 1998 CC

Incidentally I am looking for a HDD adapter, do you have one for sale?

There is a hook (if that's what you mean) on the spacer (lip), but they
are molded as one piece, so in order to slide the unit in the entire
plastic thing had to go.

The bay in the Ultrabase is made so that the hook could slide in, but
there is nothing the hook would be attached to in the Ultrabase. On the
other hand, the drive cannot fall out because the side lock.

This is an update after I obtained another ultrabay device (hdd adapter)
which behaves as you and others described - that is, the spacer can be
removed via the dovetail slider, and the hook still remains on the part.
It fits better and more reliably than the CD-ROM.

The CD-ROM is clearly not of this type. My suspicion is that it's an
older TP600 CD-ROM which was made before the 570 series was out.

So for what it worths, the bays on the Thinkpad 600 and the Ultrabase of
the Thinkpad 570 are simply not fully compatible.

If someone knows where to get an Ultrabase-compatible CD-ROM plastic
piece, or its part number, let me know - although the device holds
pretty well without it.
