I am looking for the best (and cheapest) place to buy my first
notebook. In this month's Computer Shopper I noticed an ad for Marine
Park Computers and Electronics, which is apparently located Brooklyn,
NY. The notebook prices appear to be about $200-300 bux cheaper than
just about every other ad, causing me to naturally ask - why? Does
anybody know anything about this retailer?

Also, what other retailers (preferably those on the web) are reliable
and cheap for notebook purchases? I am in California and would prefer
not to pay sales tax.

Thanks for any information you provide.

Patrick,

Except for J&R & MicroWarehouse, there have been several posts
concerning problems with the direct sellers located in NJ & NYC
(Barnetts, DataVision, NWCD, PC Universe, Marine Park, Princeton
Direct, Sunshine and the others) that post unbelieveably low prices
and usually appear at the back of Computer Shopper and other computer
magazines.

Read the posts that have appeared in this newsgroup about "bait 'n
switch" tactics and other more serious problems by doing a power
search on MARINE PARK at:

You can also research direct seller ratings at:

Hope this helps ... John

direct sales tel#. At the time I was inquiring about a Toshiba 4030 cdt and a
4010 cds notebook. After some questioning on my part and in 2 separate
conversations they were compelled to admit that these items were being
channeled from what they called international sources. These units did not
carry a toshiba warranty, but rather Marine Park supplied their own 1 year
warranty. As to the quality of the merchandise I cannot say either way.
