Why is the E7 so hard to find?
I was excited when I heard the news that the Xeon E7 chip would bring to the x86 platfom the kind of RAS features that had previously only been available for the Itanium (and, of course, other architectures like SPARC and IBM mainframes). However, currently, in looking for servers, I find that the E7 is only... more »

Can someone explain step by step how one avoid many conditional in forth as described in Moore Fourth essay?
...news:jehfpu$9de$1@dont-email.me... ... ... Is that still true for multiple cores? I.e., I would think the following is entirely possible and plausible, but I haven't studied a CPU design in decades. The CPU's designers could execute the process in parallel with one core taking one direction for the branch... more »

Intel's chipset monopoly
VIA, SiS, ATI and NVIDIA used to make chipsets for FSB CPUs up to Core 2 and Atom ... but all this ceased when Intel brought out the Nehalem. I still wonder why they have not granted permission to others to mate with their CPUs? Perhaps now they use internal memory controller, a crappy northbridge will not choke memory bandwidth, and OEMs... more »

Speed problem in IBM Lappy R50e
Hi Guys I hope some of you who read this maybe able to help me. I have an old IBM Thinkpad R50e (bought in 2005) . It has a processor that is rated to work at 1.7 gHz speed. Bus speed is 100 mHz and the multiplier is supposed to be 17. Unfortunately it is stuck at 6 that gives a low speed of 600 mHz.... more »

Using the AMD Overdrive utility
I just picked up a Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition. Now that this processor family has become the previous generation processors, I was able to pick this one up fairly cheaply. What used to be a $300+ chip, I got now for less than $200! It drops in and replaces my previous Phenom II X3 710 processor. The older Phm II was a 2.6GHz processor, while this... more »

A quick look at Bulldozer thread scheduling
It looks like AMD could've saved themselves a lot of embarrassment by simply making the secondary cores in each module look like an Intel Hyperthreading thread rather than simply as another full core. A quick look at Bulldozer thread scheduling - The Tech Report - Page 1 [link]... more »
