Hello all,

I have the following CPU----- Intel Pentium 4 - 630 ® 3.0GHz CPU, 800Mhz
FSB, 2MB L2 (Hyper Threading) +XD+EIST+EM64T------ does the EM64T at the end
mean that it is a 64 BIT cpu, and if so, do I need to install a 64 Bit
operating system?

What would happen if I installed windowsXP onto a PC with a 64Bit CPU an
Motherboard, as opposed to installing windowsXP64?

Thanks

Your CPU is 64 bit capable.
You do not need a 64 bit operating system.
Windows XP (Home or Pro) will work normally.
If you are considering XP64 be sure to check that you can get drivers for all your hardware.

Thank you Stuart

I was actually on the XP64 FAQ Site and saw all the requirements about
drivers and so forth, I do not think that I will be changing in the near
future.

Thanks again

You can also try the various 64bit versions of linux. for free of course.
With the P4-630 you have the option of either a 32 bit or 64 bit OS - your
call.

You do not need a 64-bit operating system, however you may install one
if you wish.

64-bit versions of Windows are not quite ready for prime time and mass
use yet. You could install a 32-bit version of Windows and upgrade in the
future if that makes sense. You could also install a 64-bit version of a
UNIX-like operating system such as Linux. Those are fully usable.

Your biggest issue will be finding drivers for hardware.

You have nothing to worry about, you can install the good old 32-bit
Windows XP without fear on this processor. You just won't see any of its
added advantages, but it will still work.

It is indeed a 64 bit capable processor. But it will also run 32 bit
versions of XP just fine. It is backward compatible.
