Hi Tim !
Now you've gone and done it !
Bill will probably leave a path of destruction you can see from space
getting there to get his beloved 85N. :-)
Let me (us) know what you have available. I recently took in a stray '60 (
always rescuing something ), and it needs a floppy drive. Can't fix it 'till
I get one. A few other items I have always had a hankering for.........
Good to see you back !

Hi Bob,
hadn't realised you were "back in the fold", so to speak. Thanks
for the welcome.
It would take too long to check and list what I have, it'd be easier
if you just ask for things you'd like and I'll ferret out what I have
in that category.

Never left. I just usually remain very very very quiet. I haven't missed
"looking" at this newsgroup on a daily basis since well back into the '90s.
When basking at the feet of the Masters, it is better to listen and learn,
than open ones keyboard and reveal a terrible mental tragedy inflicted upon

OK, I'll compile a list. In a little while. Got a dinner to prepare.
Starting with a '77 Ultimedia anything, or Server 77. Love to have a 704,
but wouldn't want to pay shipping. :-) Dual Xeon Server faster than Jim's,
so he can quit showing off. ( Amanda! )
Floppy for a '60. Did I already mention that ? :-)
Thanks Tim !

Hi Kevin,
I have a small number of processor cards, old graphic cards and
the odd memory riser, plus a 7012-320H that I'm unlikely to do

You can't *drive* to the UK--well, my truck isn't likely to go fast enough
to skim the water anyway. Otherwise I'd be right on that.
Got any KlaXXoNian technology I could borrow? :-)

Been testing the ones I have. So far they're all in need of help. Some might
come around with some persuasion. You probably don't want one that doesn't
work right away.

Alrightythen...how might you propose getting it from you to me (in the US)?
Think there's any feasible (not ruinously expensive) way?
I'd like to get the whole system and not just pieces. Having a "real"
complete one would be nice.
Moderately expensive would be justifiable. Maybe up the equivalent of $50-75
USD.

Well, actually I would. But on the other paw, I really wouldn't mind to
replace a cap or two, if I knew the thing was going to work for sure
afterwards. Damned aggravating, that after 20 years, the IBM PS/2 'chines
are crippled by such a simple device, and of course, they had to make them
proprietary. Couldn't just have a plain 'ol flop drive that exists for free
throughout the 'verse, is ubiquitous to the nth degree, and practically
everyone has piles of all colours still laying around. ( and has thrown out
truckloads. )
I *have* briefly scanned some of the websites, and noted some of the elders
( Peter, Jim, Louis, etc. ) comments on "adapting" a regular clone flop
drive, and will probably study this more closely. If this can be done, I'll
probably just do that. Once an adapter, doohicky, or zxipptq is made, a
practically infinite supply of flop drives would then be available.
If ANYONE has done this, or has the plans, please contact me at:
ten.esuf@sttawbob
and I'll get on it. I can probably MAKE the device, but I can't DESIGN the
device.
I'll make sure there is a little something extra in your paycheck for the
plans. :-)

Hi Tim.
I'm looking for another 9-K or two (10/100 ethernet) but can probably
get that on my side of the pond. Any chance of an MCA Fibre Channel

When you get around to it, dump whatever docs you come up with on a
CD, DVD, or I can give you an FTP. I wouldn't worry too much about
sorting it, let Google and fulltext search (http://ps-2.kev009.com:

able to assemble a Server 77 equivalent as I still have *loads* of
those 16MB ECC SIMMs going spare) an 85 and 95(A)s here, plus PC
Servers in MCA 320, 500, 520 and 720 flavours (not a PCS704, but IIRC
I have backup PCS520 and PCS720 plus a lot of spare PCS720 200/233Mhz
CPU cards sans processor and heatsink and other odd stuff FWIW)
Netfinity's and my humungous Multiprise mainframe). Plus there's all

I second that motion!
Jelte.
I'll look and see what my 9-K 10/100 collection is, as I mostly run
10Mbs over my local net and 16Mbps over the Token-Ring local net, all
through a Buffalo 125Mbs (sometimes) Wireless LAN Gateway/Router to
the Cable Modem, with a basic 90Mhz Model 95A being the OS/2 file/
print server and Ethernet to Token-Ring bridge (even though I've got a
RouteSwitch and a dedicated LAN Bridge box to play with too).
FTP would probably be quickest and simplest, as I'd have to fire up a
system that has one of those embedded CMOS backup batteries that's
died, to even begin to do CD burning, which would be a serious pain as
that system isn't fully setup to access the file server too. I've yet
to finalise the setup for my USB 2.0 Portable CD-RW/DVD drive and
which laptop I want to use that with, primarily. So much to do, so
little time.
Cheers,

Hmm, I have plenty of variation in the Type-1, Type-2 and Type-3s,
which I ought to partially distribute around, but almost all Type-4s
are in systems. I might part with a unique 60/120Mhz Overdriven Type-4

small consideration just to spread the wealth, as it were.

That it (truly) is! The later 2.88MB drives are a vast improvement, or
so it seems anyway. I've only lost one of those to an electronic
failure. (Another one had the signs of living a hard life and was just
plain fidgety about loading diskettes. Once it was loaded, it was
fine.)
> If this can be done, I'll probably just do that.
> If ANYONE has done this, or has the plans
For the pin-connector type drives, I believe it's been done! (And if
so, it was done by no less than IBM.)
Imagine my surprise when I found this interesting device in my
7012-397. It's exactly what you're thinking--a cable that goes from a
PS/2 style floppy connector on the planar and splits out to plug into
a plain old floppy drive with conventional data and power connectors.
I haven't tried borrowing it to see if it would work in a PS/2. I
think there is a very real chance it would. (I've read somewhere that
the logic used on the PS/2 floppy is different from that of a generic
drive. However, I found that a large quantity of the Panasonic floppy
drives I rescued from the trash have two sets of solder pads on the
board for jumpers that select between "AT" and "PS/2" settings.)
William
I haven't forgotten you, Bob... in fact, I have gathered some
surface-mount capacitors to see if I can fix some of my "bad" PS/2
floppy drives and make some "good" ones out of them, but I'm sick with
an upper respiratory infection again, and I really can't take solder
fumes when I'm battling a URI.
Also, I've got a lead on a couple of old 8580s that should come my way
in a week or so, maybe they'll have operational floppy drives.

I heared the rumour a while ago that IBM offered a "OEMed replacement"
for the FDDs in R6K, but never could verify it.

Not much of a deal - basically. The devil is in the detail again ... and
in the type / maker of the FDD they used for that purpose.

The main difference is
- using the right-hand "media sense" switch or not (PS/2s don't)
- signalling the proper "Diskette Changed" signal
- using the proper "drive select" (PS/2 use a twisted DS1 as drive 0)
Then you only need to pull out the wires for +5V / +12V from the
combined power / data cable, adapt the footplate and the most of the
work is done.
I even adapted the card-edge plate and tilted footplate from a dead
Mitsu drive and stuffed it onto a NEC and used this Zombie in my Mod. 70.
It worked. Even booted from it ... but only with *one* diskette. If you
need to swap it out you're f... err ... stucked.
Obviously I made a mistake somewhere.

IBM did it for the paddle-style drives, too. The 6262 printer used a
PS/2 paddle-style floppy drive to load microcode, when the supply of
Certified Spare Parts drives ran out, someone designed a cable assembly
to allow using industry-standard 1.44MB drives. The cable actually went
through a couple of iterations, because it was first made to support the
720KB drive used in the 6262-x12 and -x14 models, then another assembly
was made to support the 1.44MB drive used in the 6262-x22 models, and I
think that a third assembly was made to support either 720KB or 1.44MB
drive types. I've got samples of some of those assemblies around here
somewhere...

Yep, IIRC both the P60 and P66 complexes I have have the full 66MHz

Well...how can I go about getting it?
I'd hate to road trip for just one machine (but might consider doing
exactly that). I would, however, be more than willing to pay not only
shipping but also something for the unit itself.

We fought on the Spock/XGA/XGA-2 drivers front, and I think, we won the
battle. There is still a bit more to do, and the most funny thing is that
contrary to what the world was made to believe, the XGA manages now 64K

Thank you, it was largely a team work. There are times when CSIPH mobilizes
efforts and comes up with significant deeds. I remember the MSDN CDs, the
code served as a starting base template, it got fully rewritten and fixed.
It was however also very important to learn and know how the device works,
translating this to code is in a sense the easier part.
> Keep the CSIPH banner flying.
This banner is a patchwork, every single smallest new piece makes it
larger...;)

I felt fairly certain that he'd find one over your side of the pond
eventually, if he was diligent enough about it. I really felt harsh not
responding to his desire that I ship mine over, as we were talking a couple
of hundred quid plus (guesstimating ~$300-400) and I didn't want to lock him
into a very expensive commitment. Perhaps a little cowardly of me, but all
meant with the best of intentions.

Cheers,
Well, since "he" hasn't responded, how about $237.69 cash + shipping? I
would love to have it !!
I can even send one of my special aquatic homing burrows I acquired from a
band of nomadic Ohmish settlers that is resistant to layers of global
warming laying all over the ground head over there and pick the thing up.
Better yet, better send two, to balance the load.
I'll send the cash USPS so it gets there faster. Bucky is a little slow.

Going once, going twice...
If my offer has not been topped, let me know. I'll get the cash in the mail.
We can discuss shipping after the holidays are over.
Thanks !

I haven't been following this thread for a while, so I'll send you a
private e-mail here in the near future. (If I'm not too late, that
is.)
William

I've been as diligent as time allows (and this thread simply fell off
of my watch list). I've been watching eBay (as that was my main hope)
and kind of wondering why I hadn't heard back. (However, you did say
that it would be a *long* time until I did. So I was planning on
waiting a *long* time.)
I seem to remember that the last time we figured on being fairly
serious about sending it that postage was about $150 or so to send the
machine over. However, maybe that was in pieces and without the case?
I don't know, it's been a while.

I've got an awful lot on my plate (as usual! I think it's a counter-boredom
thing, for me).

You're darn tootin'. I recall being quite horrified by the cost, even for
"Surface Shipping" i.e. by the slow boat, via China (kidding). Like you, I
can't remember the exact costs now. And I've yet to dig up the "fully loaded
weight" from whichever reference sheet or manual it's in. I don't have a
machine to weigh that heavy an item accurately. I will get to it, just not
very soon.
Oh well. Bob, please be sure you enjoy that 9585 for me! :-)
William
Czech your email, young Will. I sendt a response yesterday. Bidding is
still open.
(Disclaimer: I really wasn't sure whether or not I should post this. I
already know--as do many of the other long-timers here--that I've been
the center of more than one heated exchange, mostly due to some really
boneheaded screw-ups of my own doing. Perhaps this is another...I've
written and rewritten this several times. It bothers me.)
> Bidding is still open.
Bidding? I didn't know this had turned into an auction.
Bob Watts has two of the 9585 K/N systems, so I figured if anything he
was joking. I'm sorry to see that it doesn't appear to be that way.
(And yes, I have tried talking him out of a unit he already has.)
I'm sorry, but I just won't play that game. I said as much in my e-
mail response back to you, and haven't heard anything yet.
I feel bad about having missed out, but you know what: it's just a
computer. That's why I'm just going to wander off and leave it at
that, instead of possibly saying a number of things I'd really regret.
I don't really feel that way anyhow, Bob and I have had some great
discussions over the years, and I'd like to remain on good terms with
him. I *want* one, but there *will* be another somewhere and someday.
Maybe it's just desserts, I made a big mistake some years back with a
25MHz Model 70 and someone who desperately wanted it. I'll just keep
on looking.
Well, Bob, enjoy your new 9585 K/N. I'm out. :-)
William
If that was me, I'm sorry - it was almost certainly my fault. (I'm
not nearly such a jerk now that I've been bicycling so much.)

William, I think you're as deserving an heir to PS/2dom as could be.
Hold onto that good perspective, though.
(I wish I had one of these things - only so I could send it straight
to you. If I should die without a will, you can have all the PS/2
stuff If you ever plan a trip out west look me up - stop by for a
beer or ice cream or something ;-)

Be assured that it was *not* you. I'm sure we have disagreed on things, but
none were serious and most of them made me think.
The reference has to do with people who entered into deals with me in good
faith that I'd see them through. I went way over what my resources would
allow, went way off the deep end in terms of my reaction to requests to make
good on those obligations and in general had a pretty nasty ride where I
picked up some bruises. I came away with a lot learned, but it was a hard
lesson that I'd rather not have had to go through and I don't know that any
involved have ever forgiven me those transgressions. I don't expect that
they should.
> William, I think you're as deserving an heir to PS/2dom as could be.

I'm holding on to it. :-)
Good things come to those who wait. I've always believed that and I see no
reason to stop now.

If I'm ever in that part of the world, I'll be sure to look you up. Could be
entertaining. :-)

Yep, it's a Klaxo (sic) plot. They are trying to stir up hate,
discontent, and health care reform. It's all part of their plan to
convert hume currency into gold pressed latinum so they can subsidize
more space hookers. You think that blizzard in Copenhagen was just a
coincidence?
And Watts wandts to buy some drones, too. He likes mine.
Gotta go, I need to beef up my shields. He's sure to target me now.
He'll probably launch some battle-tyres at me. Duck and cover, and cover
your duck.
Inserting comments as I go..........
It appears that I may have acted 'fracking irrationally by not waiting weeks
instead of days to "place a bid" on what I thought was an abandoned 85N.
Normally, irrationally is SOP and not a problem here at the BODADC, (
Basement of Doom and Diet Cola ) but occasionally causes problems........
Also, it appears that something called "Christmas" is about to break out
that I was previously unaware of, and this will require copious quantities
of cash that is overwhelming my presses, and will necessitate a reduction to
my bid. Which shouldn't be a problem, as no one else ( to my complete
SHOCK ) has not bid anyway.
New bid: $123
Then, I found some Super Collider Earthmover Gumball Burnout Special tars
for the Cherokee that I wandt to buy, and this requires a further reduction
to my bid.
New bid: $87

Which leads me to the REAL reason for this OT post. Well, except for that
85N thing...
I got this really great deal on 77 "Heapkit" Drone kits !! ( It's my
understanding that Heapkit is a subsidiary of Heathkit, and are *almost* as
good !) My good buddy GreenWald turned me onto these things. It seems that
a company ( Heapkit ) is selling this things cheap 'cause they are on the
brink of solvency, and didn't want to appear special during this economic
downturn and attract attention from you know who.
Below is an excerpt taken from the brochure:
( I had to translate, 'cause it was in Injun )
***********************
Congratulations! You have purchased one of the finest Drone making kits
available anywhere in the Universe. Guaranteed to amaze and impress your
friends, your new Drone will be the envy of the neighborhood, and likely
only cause the kind of trouble that young impetuous teenagers get into
during springbreak while drinking heavily.
Your Drone is designed to deliver days of trouble free Droning, and provide
hours of enjoyment and fun until the bats run out. ( Refills of bats are
available all over EartH, and we here at Heapkit INC. are not responsible
for refilling of your Drone bats. )
Your Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited Edition Heapkit
Drone was carefully custom fabricated by nomadic AHmish settlers on the
plains of the mountains of Pennsylvania. Rare ore hewn from clear colored
plastic unobtanium horizontal cliffs located in tropical jungles in Northern
Russia is transported under the careful scrutiny of Lt. Frank Drebin using
special Aquatic Burrows to a secret location in Iceland where the ore is
allowed to "settle during shipment" before continuing it's journey to the
Horn of Africa, where is it loaded onto Pirate submarines allowing it to be
smuggled secretly without anyone knowing about it to the shores of Canada,
where it can be loaded into carefully concealed Oscar Meyer Weinermobiles
for final shipment to the meandering streams of the picturesque AHmis
country.
Using steam powered cordless tools running only on steam, these gentle
warring warriors take special clear colored plastic unobtanium ore hewn from
the horizontal cliffs of unobtanium plastic found only in the tropical
jungles located in Northern Russia and create these special Rare Signature
Series Handmade One of a kind Limited Edition Heapkit Drones one at a time
on an assembly line. Each and every handmade Rare Signature Series Handmade
One of a kind Limited Edition Heapkit Drone is then thoroughly tested to
conform to the highest standards of quality by OSHA engineers and each
approved Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited Edition
Heapkit Drone that passes this rigorous testing receives UL approval for
use in the U.S.A. Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited
Edition Heapkit Drones that do not pass are shipped to China and sold in
Wal-Mart stores and labeled accordingly.
(WARNING: Accept ONLY Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited
Edition Heapkit Drone that have the UL approval sticker, or unexpected
naked singularities could result ! )
These Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited Edition Heapkit
Drone are dishwasher safe, and will not harm anything else in the
dishwasher. However, the Drone itself will be destroyed, and the candy will
probably melt. If the Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited
Edition Heapkit Drone is plugged in to a 220 or 221V outlet, ( whatever it
takes ) it will momentarily act as a Lava lamp, but this is temporary.
WARNING: Never overfill your Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind
Limited Edition Heapkit Drone! The delicate plastic unobtanium mechanism
that is inside is patented, and prone to failure. You should never use the
Rare Signature Series Handmade One of a kind Limited Edition Heapkit Drone
in fits of rage, and only spin the dial indicator carefully to prevent loss
of equilibrium.

Well, that sounded impressive, and I have always wantded a Drone, so I
ordered a bunch of 'em!
Which means I'll have to reduce my bid once again:
New bid: $ .37
But I still feel confident, since NO ONE else is bidding. Heck, I'll even
pay shipping.

A fun read, but a budding Douglas Adams... I don't think sooo!!!
You're only in contention with William AFAIK, so even 37cents may yet win.

The Centre ?! Really ?
Are you from the TV show "The Pretender ? "

More like "Man in a Suitcase", if you remember that one, I'd say. Except
this main character's more like the film version thereof with Michael Caine
playing the lead.

Going back in time, I believed that Jim and I had at least a "loose
leaf" agreement for me to obtain a 9585 K/N series system that he has
(or had). The initial dealings were suggested as being certain
Thinkpad parts or something. Parts I didn't have in any case, so I
offered to pony up the cash for shipping and a big box.
Well, the big box went away (don't know where, to be honest) and I
kind of forgot about the whole thing. It got pushed onto a back
burner.
Since it came back up here recently, things started moving again. I'd
never lost interest, it just got lost in the shuffle. My ISP changed
newsfeeds and caused all my marked postings to disappear. I'd just as
soon pay some cash for shipping and maybe a little extra for time and
trouble spent on it--and be done with it.
The problem I run into is that I take people far too seriously, and
that is exactly what I did when the "auction" bit came up. I don't
always "get" it when someone's joking. As far as I knew, it was real
and serious...and I'd missed out. So I bowed out, believing that I'd
simply missed out and that would be it. (And should that turn out to
be the case, I'll just stay out, as I said I would.)
Am I still interested? Why yes I am. But I've got a line on another,
as someone contacted me stating that they have one. I intend to follow
through on that, although it will not be inexpensive.
Bob, if you want Jim's 9585 K/N, take it. But if not, let's get things
moving again. I know I've dropped the ball in spots here. Please tell
me exactly what it will take (cash? Ultimedia CDs? other PS/2 stuff?)
and I'll do it.
William
