(Sorry for the x-posting, but since it could be either the
motherboard, the sound driver, or some setting in W2003...)
I've done the following on an W2003 Server Standard SP1, but I still
get no sound whatsoever:
- in the BIOS > Onboard PCI Device Controller > Onboard AC97 Audio
Controller = Auto
- Installed latest "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" driver
- started Windows Audio service
- no yellow ! in Device Manager
Any idea why I still get no sound when plugging a headphone in any of
the sound plugs, either in front or in the back?
Thank you.

Be sure you have the right drivers.
If it is a VIA Chipset, go with the VIA Vinyl drivers, www.viaarena.com
Deinstall soundcard in protected-mode (F5 boot). XP's autoconfig can be
tricky (booting 2003 std.) but should do as it should do.
It's not a Radio :-), it's digital.
Check with a second F5 boot if any soundcard devices are removed.
Start 2003 and have the right drivers prepared. (Look to the Chip
Number of your Soundchip and check the whitepapers of the Soundcard
drivers if it is the same chip).

I guess I do, as I downloaded it from Asus' very site:
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=42&model=199&modelmenu=1
"The SoundMAX Digital Audio System is the industry's highest
performance and most reliable audio solution for business
professionals, audiophiles, musicians, and gamers."
If only it could actually play sound... ;-)

I always try to find out the manufacturer of the chip and dl the
drivers on their Homepage.
ASUS does not have the newest drivers, especially not for a bit older
MB's etc.

Thanks. It's going to be difficult, as it's SiS, and there's nothing
related to Asus on their site.
I'll just get a stand-alone card on eBay.
No, I would go with your onboard Soundcard. You will meet (possibly,
not sure) amazing troubles with WindowsNT, installing a second
SoundCard to your system even when you "seemingly" turned off any
settings (in the BIOS setup) of the onboard one.
;-)
XP for example, still see remnants of the onboard-sound and might
install your new card not properly, as I have met some (always, IMO)
times.
My Motherboard does not have a soundcard at all, and that are they
which work best with slot-in soundcard extender.
Better you look for a Motherboard wich surely works with slot-in
Soundcards (ISA, PCI no matter...). Or you have the guarantuee that
your BIOS Setup really turns off any routings to the onboard-crap which
is not working actually to you.

P.S.: You can alternatively turn off the sound and watch if Windows
still sees some soundcards, but you have to enable
'devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices', which is to be found in CONTROL
PANEL, SYSTEM and then Card ADVANCED, then Environment Variables, then
System Variables. Make a NEW and type 'devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices'
with the value=1
Then you can turn on the option in DEVICE MANAGER under View (restart
the system, of course), 'Show hidden devices'. Then it's working
properly for showing hidden/deinstalled etc. stuff...
P.P.S.: Just ask if you have questions as my sentences might be
difficult to comprehend.
I'd love to use the on-board sound card... except I haven't found a
way to get it work. Asus' official driver doesn't work, and SiS
doesn't have a driver for the 963L chipset:
MB

Chipset

http://www.sis.com/download/ -> no trace of 963L in Sound Driver for
2003, XP, or 2000
Codec

Thanks much for the tip. I'll see how it works.

Hi!
What Motherboard? Exact Type Number etc.!! (look on the MB, for any
other numbers etc. Revision etc.)
I'll search a driver for you.

Asus P4S800 1.01. I installed the latest sound driver 5.12.01.3665,
but no sound:

Thanks, but I'm not optimistic...

hmmm, there are different english Manuals.
Which OS do you use?

Got a definitive answer from Asus: This MB isn't compatible with W2003
:-/
Thank anyway.
Hmm seaching around comes up with the drivers on the Dell 4600 Drivers for
ADI 198x Integrated Audio v.5.12.01.5246, A22
Since the chip is the ADI 1980 model from soundmax but, they don't make
drivers.. just like most other makers..
which the ones Asus offers up are version 5.12.01.3665...either way they
are kinda buggie audio.. I know a dell 4300 with windows me. that it took
alot of proding to get the drivers to work. Replaces the standard vol
controll with soundmax but that was me.
Also looks like there was someone posting on Drivers heaven trying to make
same audio chip work in vista..
http://www.driverheaven.net/windows-vista-forum/125217-analog-devices-adi-198x-integrated-audio-driver-vista.html
there also an off chance that the AC97 drivers from realtek might work or
not..
Ok.
What's written on the onboard soundcard chip? Type everything you read
on it....
