Sound Failure - HL2Ep2 and Portal - Creative Audigy 2 ZS

I am in dire search for assistance on this issue, and haven't found
anyone else experiencing it - in spite of how many folks are out there
playing these new games from Valve.
I bought the 'Orange Box' package from Steam, which includes a number
of new games, including Portal and Half-Life 2 Episode 2. Each time I
try to run one of these games, everything looks great - but sound
ceases to work on my system. Nothing that I do helps - except complete
reinstalling the last driver set from Creative for the Audigy sound
cards - Oct '06.
I really want to play these new games, and rebooting my machine,
trying various simple sound tests from the control panel, trying
headphones, switching from 7.1 to 5.1, 4, and simple stereo settings
makes no difference.
Each time I try a game, sound fails. Reinstallation of the drivers
gets it working again. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas
for workarounds/solutions?
