The PowerVR Enhanced Version Of Wipeout XL Transcends Gamers
Between The Worlds Of Virtual And True Reality

Las Vegas -- November 18, 1996 -- NEC Electronics Inc. and
VideoLogic today displayed the PowerVR™ Enhanced™ version of
Wipeout XL™ which will be available in the first quarter of 1997.
The PowerVR Enhanced version of Wipeout XL combines vivid,
real-time 3D environments with the fierce competition of
anti-gravity ballistic racing to create scenes so graphic the
game player cannot decipher between virtual and true reality.

Jointly developed by NEC and VideoLogic, the PowerVR architecture
is the future of high-quality three-dimensional graphics for the
next generation of interactive entertainment.

Psygnosis joins a growing list of game developers who have taken
advantage of the PowerVR Ready™ program. The program was
developed by NEC and VideoLogic to help game developers and game
players identify the level of support for each PowerVR-certified
game.

Using a revolutionary 3D design, the PowerVR architecture
combines on-chip hidden surface removal with a unique method of
texture mapping and a reduced memory architecture to bring 3D
images to life. The PowerVR architecture delivers the "superfast
fill rates" needed to satisfy gamers’ demands for higher screen
resolutions by combining the on-chip 32-bit accurate Z-buffer
function with one-third of the texture memory bandwidth
requirements of other 3D solutions.

Wipeout XL

Wipeout XL is the highly anticipated sequel to the original
ground-breaking futuristic racer, WipeOut™ from Psygnosis which
virtually redefined the notion of next generation video games.
Wipeout XL features eight all-new tracks which include two hidden
tracks. Players choose from four racing classes, including
difficulty curves for the novice driver, and a superfast hidden
Phantom class for WipeOut veterans. There are 15 ships and 11
weapons in addition to new checkpoints and pit stops. An energy
bar has been implemented and ships will now be destroyed after
too much collision damage.

The PowerVR Enhanced titles are more advanced than basic
Direct3D™ games. Minimum requirements for a title in this
category include frame rate of 30fps, resolution of 640x480 and a
minimum color depth of 16 bits.

NEC and VideoLogic Launch Certification Program for Games

PowerVR Ready Program Ensures Ultimate in Game Compatibility

Las Vegas -- November 18, 1996 -- NEC Electronics Inc. and
VideoLogic today announced the PowerVR™ Ready™ Program, an
easy-to-understand game certification system. The new system
consists of three levels -- Extreme, Enhanced and Accelerated --
making it easy for content developers and game players to
identify the level of support for each PowerVR-certified game.

"The PowerVR Ready program was created to satisfy a need for a
clear, concise means of identifying Direct3D™ compatible games
that have been optimized to take full advantage of the PowerVR 3D
technology within the game community," said Robin Seaver,
director of strategic business development - multimedia, NEC
Electronics Inc.

The PowerVR Ready program consists of a growing list of game
developers who have developed games for the Microsoft Direct3D
API and/or the PowerVR proprietary SGL API. To date, some of the
developers that will be adopting the PowerVR Ready Program
include Activision®, Electronic Arts®, Fox® Interactive, Kalisto
Entertainment ®, NAMCO®, Psygnosis®, Reality Bytes®, Sega®
Entertainment, Ubi Soft Entertainment and Vic Tokai® Inc.

The PowerVR Extreme™ Certification

The ultimate in the PowerVR certification supported titles will
be reserved for games of the highest quality, not only in
technical capabilities but also in game play and market appeal.
Games in this category must achieve a minimum frame rate and
resolution of 30fps at 800x600. All of this must be done with a
minimum of 16.7 million colors and should take advantage of all
advanced features of PowerVR. Examples of this type of game
include Virtua On™ by Sega Entertainment, Rave Racer™, Tekken 2™
and Air Combat 22™ by NAMCO and Ultim@te Race™ by Kalisto
Entertainment.

The PowerVR Enhanced™ Certification

Titles more advanced than basic Direct3D but not in the Extreme
category due to lower screen resolution, frame rate and color
depth will be found in this category. These titles include
features and capabilities not found in other 3D hardware.

Minimum requirements for a title in this category include a frame
rate of 30fps, resolution of 640x480 and a minimum color depth of
16 bits. A number of titles fall into this category and will make
up the bulk that take advantage of the PowerVR technology. This
may mean taking advantage of either high-resolution,
translucencies, shadows, light volumes, fogging, filtering, among
others. Examples of games in this category include Ubi Soft
Entertainment’s POD™, MechWarrior™ 2 by Activision and Wipeout
XL™ from Psygnosis.

The PowerVR Accelerated™ Certification

All other PowerVR architecture compatible Direct3D titles not in
the Extreme or Enhanced categories will be found here. The
minimum level of 3D support required is 20fps and 640x480
resolution with a minimum color depth of 16 bits.

The PowerVR Architecture

The PowerVR architecture combines on-chip hidden surface removal
with a unique method of texture mapping and a reduced memory
architecture to bring 3D images to life. The PowerVR architecture
delivers the "superfast fill rates" needed to satisfy gamers’
demands for higher screen resolutions by combining the on-chip
32-bit accurate Z-buffer function with at least one-third of the
texture memory bandwidth requirements of other 3D solutions.

Electronic Arts’™ best-selling combat helicopter flight simulator
-- AH-64D Longbow™. Featuring fully textured rolling terrain and
the most technologically advanced 3D visuals for unparalleled
realism, this helicopter simulator gives game players the
ultimate environment to experience the sensation of air combat
action -- short of joining the Army. Electronic Arts and NEC have
entered into an agreement in principle to convert and optimize
the Windows® 95 version of AH-64D Longbow for the PowerVR
architecture for release in summer 1997.

Electronic Arts joins a growing list of game developers who have
taken advantage of the PowerVR Ready™ program.

The PowerVR architecture delivers the “superfast
fill rates” needed to satisfy gamers’ demands for higher screen
resolutions by combining the on-chip 32-bit accurate Z-buffer
function with at least one-third of the texture memory bandwidth
requirements of other 3D solutions. Jointly developed by NEC and
VideoLogic, the PowerVR architecture is the future of
high-quality, three-dimensional graphics for the next generation
of interactive entertainment.

The PowerVR Enhanced titles are more advanced than basic
Direct3D™ games. Minimum requirements for a title in this
category include frame rate of 30 fps, resolution of 640x480 and
a minimum color depth of 16 bits.

I like press releases that don't go overboard. :)

Wow. Too bad about the lack of filtering, but impressive nonetheless. I
like the rating system, nice idea if they can enforce it.

REPLY:

Yeah sounds good but it's a little lacking in detail. Like what
processor is it to obtain the 30 fps. A 486-66??

I think most of their figures are based on a P166.
