id Software lead artist Kevin Cloud recently told Shacknews that one
of the strengths of the company's new engine is its cross-platform
performance.
"You don't even have to worry about how it's going to look on PS3 or
360. Right now we've got it running cross-platform running 60 hertz,
and it looks really good," said Cloud. "In terms of what artists are
available to achieve--it's something you have to see for yourself. I

id will be hosting the 13th annual QuakeCon convention on July 31.

Maybe they should do a Commander Keen in 3D. LOL.
Just kidding LOL.
First finish Doom 4... then maybe do Keen 3D for fun lol.
Like Battlefield Heroe's or so ;)
Announcement is on the id software website too.
I wonder what does this mean for their "rave" game ?
Is it still "on" or is it "dropped" ? ;)
Anyway let's get serious for Doom 4:
I expect nothing less than:
1. Awesome/mindblowing sound quality. Creative labs should help out a bit.
2. Awesome/graphics. I am sure they ll manage to cook something up LOL.
3. Awesome/animations. Check.
4. Awesome special effect ? Hmmmmm.
5. Nice story ? Hmmmm. I hope they continue where doom 3 left off... with
the marine being transported back via spaceship, and then ofcourse something
goes horribly wrong and he ends up fighting his way through space :)
Maybe he ends up fighting in all kinds of spaceships which have been
infected by the hell creatures ? Some spaceships have teleporters to
teleport from one ship to the other. Some spaceships don't and he'll have to
find other ways of getting there... maybe jumping through space in a
spacesuit from ship to ship.
Then he finds out it was all planned by betruger... trying to smuggle
creatures back to earth to infect earth as well.
The marine much stop them before the spaceships reach earth ! :)
Meanwhile betruger is cooking up one of his new evil plans and devices...
maybe virus.. to infect earth.. or maybe special creatures with special
powers and special weapons. Yeah betruger or whatever has learned from his
mistakes in the passed. His creatures were not powerfull enough to face even
a single marine ;)
This time betruger has special aliens... which fire everything you could
possibly think of... betruger goes big this time... he wants all bases
covered.
Creatures which shoot ice... Sub-zero creatures... if you touch them you
die... maybe they even half transparent because of all the ice in them. Fire
creatures... fire fire at you... you burn... you scream LOL... but then fire
goes out again... not powerfull enough lol...
Smoke creatures... which lay down layers of smoke... so you can't see
shit... and then they COME AT YOUUUUUUUUUUU from the MYST.
Sometimes screaming... sometimes not. Sometimes sneaking up onto you from
behind... and then they will breath down your neck and grab you in the neck
and bite you in the neck... and you ll be scared shitless. Jumping out of
seat from suprises like that.
Void creatures... which have the stars of space embedded in them... The mere
fabric of space has been interwoven with the creatures.... and now the
creatures can shoot blackholes at you... you will fall down into portals ?
Slime creatures... which will spue green slime everywhere... so you get
stuck... and can't move that fast... you can't run away anymore... you will
have to fight with your guns mostly. just pray pray pray pray that you have
enough ammo during sticky situations ;) :)
And ofcourse the spider creatures... except this time... webs everywhere...
which get into your face... and stick real bad too...
You ll have to struggle through the fricking spider webs... But you'll have
your thrusty flame thrower... to burn away the mess.
And tourch some niiccceeeeeeee screaming burning spiders too ;) Little
creatures in the webs... baby spiders... tiny but hundreds of them...
Little yellow buggers... crawling everywhere... they mostly harmless... but
they are still there... if you dont kill them... they will come back later
on.... hundreds of them... they ll have growed... they are mutated... they
have a growth rate... a hellish growth rate... they grow faster.... when
some other creature is nearby.... the other creature nurses the spiders...
so they grow faster...
The marine must kill the nursing creature fast... before it can make the
little spiders grow.
Mean nasty androids... Betruger managed to capture some robots... some
fighting robots which were on the spaceships.
He modified them... they got nasty... now your fighting humanities own
robots...
Like the little crawling robot with the funny sounds... he now a little bit
bigger... bad-der... and black thing over him... with mean red eyes and he
shoots mean red plasma fire/bullits at you... which wistle passed or into
your head... if you dont step aside ;) :)
One of the spaceships of the marines... managed to capture aliens from some
other planet... it too was in the convoy....
Betruger naturally and ofcourse was very intrigued... by the capturement and
containment of these aliens from another world/planet... he immediatly so
the potential to infect these aliens and to mutate them into even more
powerfull dangerous aliens.
These could be the classic gray alien ... but then even meaner... and more
bad and ofcourse little bit black to... maybe even dark greenish.
And the alien from aliens... even more hunger for flesh... his transparent
watery slime... leaves long trails on the floor... he's so hungry... he
drewling all over the place.
These creatures are rest less... the most have flesh... and they will have
it now ! They will search the ships for flesh... and they will eat anything
they find.
The marine could run into these creatures at any given time... and then it's
up to him what to do.... run away ? hide ? fight ? lurk ? woeh... exciting.
Finally earth could send additional space ships... maybe even a space ship
war... blasting holes into the existing spaceships... creating total
destruction... nice levels to play in...
Then the marine plus the new reinforcements could fight together.... and
kick ass all over the ships.
Some die here and there... some have to go elsewhere... some survive... and
fight on... finally the marine finds betruger... in his latest form... some
magnificant spacecreature... with tenticles... throwing things at the
marine... trying to bite him too.. with his long mouth...
But the marine has a little trick up his sleeve... he has a nice granade
launcher... and launches some deadly granades inside the creature's mouth...
and booooom... splatter the creatures explodes into pieces.
Then suddenly a poisnous gas is released... which cannot be escaped... and
the marine dies.... but he goes to heaven... and there he meets god... and
god says to him... no marine ! you are to young to die ! you must go back
and destroy the evil !
Then the marine wakes up again... what was that ? Was it a dream ? was it
real ? Who knows ?
The marine is confused... and a little dazzy... something saved him from
death... but he doesn't know what... he has a special cap on his mouth that
allows him to breath through the poisnous gas... how did he get that mouth
piece ?
Now he fights on... cleaning up those creatures that still existed... but he
wonders...
Finally the marine learns that there are other good creatures in space...
very powerfull creatures... they are observing earth from across the
universe.... they see all... they known all... they decided to interfene for
the good of earth... they do not want to see it destroyed... that was what
the marine saw in his vision.
A vision of greatness across the galaxy.
End of story ;) :)

I never got that piece of shareware to run on my good old trusted
TRS-80 :(
Dunno why ......
Oh wait .... where's my map maker?????
I do. You got the entire first level for free. If you weren't hooked by
the time you got through you'd never be.

Doom I gave me many hundreds hours of good fun.
The best five dollars I ever spent.

My first exposure to id was Wolfenstein 3D. Doom was incremental, really,
with the only added feature (beyond better graphics) being fake vertical
aiming.
Quake was the one that made me think of the word "amazing" - full 3D aiming,
(with plenty of monsters coming at you from above to make it useful), and a
truly 3D environment where you could put yourself almost anywhere. It was
also the first one that made computer speed really relevant - you needed a
Pentium to run it fullscreen at 320x240, and I only had a 486 DX2/66 at the
time. Now, I can run the GL version in a 2048x1536 window and get over
600fps.

Ignore the Python in me to send e-mail.
There are two special effects I want to see in a nextgen game:
1. Transparent blue ice creatures with glass distortion effect.
2. Transporter effect:
Entity walks into the transporter. The camera zooms out.
The entity which could be a human or a monster, is slowly disintegrated.
Orange electricity particles swirl around the entity inside the transporter.
The entity is slowly torn apart in either two ways:
1. Block by block it's disintregrated.
or
2. Skin layer by skin layer.
First the flesh is torn apart, then the skeleton/bones become visible, then
finally the bones disolve as well.
On the other side of the transporter if visible the opposite happens.
After everything was torn apart... so now first the bones appear... and then
the flesh around it and ofcourse the orange particles are spinning around it
all the time in circles.
I think that would be a very cool special effect in 3D ! ;) :)
Much better than the 2D transporter crap which Doom 3 had LOL.
Bye,
Skybuck.
Blowing holes into the monsters.
Doom 4 should have lots of cruesome holes in the creatures which can be
blown out if you get what I am saying.
Like the brown nigga from Doom 1... BOOOM... hole right in his head.
Doom 4 should have that... lot's of shootable holes everywhere.
Makes it more believable that the creatures are actually filled... and not
just hollow polygon models.
And it makes it a whole lot more fun :)
And creatures should also fly back a litttttle bit... just a little bit..
especially for the shotgun..
BOOM... fly back bitch yeah LOL ;) :)
Bye,
Skybuck.
I had a Cyrix 166 at the time. My friends Pentium 133 ran it faster, mine
working out to something like a Pentium 100 or 120.
With lot's of white possibly high tech buildings. Tall buildings here and
there too.
It's a very advanced technology civilization.
Maybe Doom 5 could take place on the high tech civilization planet. Because
ofcourse betruger learned of the vision as well, and with his hellish powers
he decides to take revenge on the high tech civilization for intervening
with his plans !
Now that hi-tech civilization will face betruger's creatures of hell. Can
the hi-tech civilization survive ? Unfortunately not.
They over estimated themselfes, and they under estimated the powers of hell.
The underestimated the speed at which betruger would arrive at their home
planet. And they under estimate the sheer number of hell creatures.
The hi-tech civilization has no choice but to call on the help of those who
they helped in the past. They call on the one marine that betruger fears !
YOU !!
Yes YOU !!
It's up to you to help the hi-tech civilization. You as a marine find a
teleporter that was used be betruger to teleport some extra hell creatures
from earth to the high tech civilization.
Now you as a marine enter the teleporter to teleport across the galaxy to
the hi-tech battle.
There you find yourself in a huge war between hi-tech machines and the big
army of betruger...
You must now fight through hordes of hell creatures. Fortunately the hi-tech
civilization has found a way to protect itself from betruger's hellish
powers. Their hi-tech robots cannot be infected... something which was
unforeseen by betruger... mystified by this obstacle... betruger has to find
out the secret of this technology which prevent him from learning what it is
that prevent him from using his powers onto the hi-tech robots.
The secret of the hi-tech robots is a chip manufacturing plant which
produces hi-tech processors which have auto heal... as soon as betruger
tries to modify the chips, they auto heal... preventing him from
successfully modifieing the core logic of the robots.
Betrugers must try and destroy this chip facility... you as a marine must
prevent betruger from doing so.
Further more you as a marine must now ofcourse again close the hellish
teleporter that betruger has summoned.
The teleport is deep inside the planet... into it's iron/metal/lava core...
where temperatures are very very very hot.
Here lurk betrugers most powerfull creatures which can stand the incredible
temperatures...
The hi-tech civilization cannot enter it's core... it's chips can't handle
the strong magnetic fields inside the core.
However you as a human being can survive the huge magnetic interference !
and thus the hi-tech civilization has prepared a special suit for you...
which can withstand these high temperatures... and special weapons which
will not melt.
Now you as a marine have to go done into the core and fuck up that
teleporter once and for all ! ;) :)
So doom 4 should have some links to the story of Doom 5... so that when
people play Doom 4 they will wonder about wooooooww... what will we fight
face in doom 5 ?
Is this vision what we will face ? hmmmm :):):)
Something to wonder and look forward too =D
Bye,
Skybuck.
I first played Quake on a 486 DX4-100Mhz with 16MB RAM at
320x240. When QuakeWorld was released, I was playing online with that
same machine over a 33.6k internet connection. On a crowed server, it
moved like a slide show.

There are games that stand the test of time, and still are great, despite
dated graphics. Doom3 isn't one of these. It's a completley scripted, pretty
rail shooter. The difference between it and other great older games is in
the intelligence of the design, flexibility of exploring and attaining goals
as well as side quests and missions, how real and immersive the world is
(and this should transcend graphics), gameplay, as well uniqueness of the
original concept. System Shock 2, Thief Gold, Thief 2, Might and Magic IV,
V, VI and VII are all examples of excellent games that demonstrate this.
There's lots more. But none of the Doom series or the Quake series fall into
this category. I enjoy playing through a game like Quake 4 or Crysis. But
it's like dating one of the winners of America's Next Top Model.

Scary, yes, largely because there's so much dark! I hate not being
able to see.

Don't know anything about Doom 3 specifically, but -
gamma adjustment problem, perhaps?
Bob M
Not a gamma problem. The game is designed to be dark. Alot of
the action takes place in darkened, confined areas. Makes for a good
"jump" when a bad-guy just appears from the shadows. Unfortunately,
it's too dark most of the time, and makes it hard to navigate the
levels.
Doom 3 has the best sound on a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro 7.1 Soundblaster with
a Creative GigaWorks 7.1 Surround Sound Speaker Set of any game I have ever
played.
Creative even has a special sound pack for Doom 3.
The graphics are also pretty phenomenal.
I still believe Doom 3 could have had even better sound.
The only other shooter games which come close to Doom 3 sound-wise are:
Quake 4 very good.
Battlefield 2 very good.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic... pretty good.
Call of Duty 4 a little bit good.
Call of Juarez a little bit good.
Also the missions of Doom 3 are pretty interesting to play. Something
different happens each time.
Sometimes monster crawl over the ceiling, sometimes the crawling side ways,
sometimes this, sometimes that.
I would recommend all doubters to play the game on a *really* high end
system (Like mine =D) with ultra quality settings before judging this game !
Also do play all other shooters and you will soon learn that Doom 3 has the
best sound and I like sound a lot !
It adds the 4th or 5th dimension to a game !
Nowadays many games have great graphics but not all games have great sound !
Finally I like the way Doom 3 is a real killer game.
Are you pissed off and want to let go of some steaaaam ?
Doom 3 is a nice single player possiblity to let of some steaaam and make a
whhhole lot of noise at the same time ! =D
When kick some ass:
Battlefield 2 is nice option too =D
The rest of the games are just hanging on.
Finally I especially LOVE THE PLASMA GUN of Doom 3 !
It's the best weapon ever, with the best and coolest sound ever !
Though the BFG of Quake 3 was nice too ! ;)
Bye,
Skybuck.
ET: QW is made by fags !
Don't compare it to Doom 3 or you gonna piss me off ! LOL.

No, it's actually dark. Unlike most "dark" games, where you can just turn the
gamma up to brighten the area, Doom 3 actually has real darkness.
A flashlight is standard equipment in the game, though you can't wield a gun
at the same time. So the idea is, you keep the flashlight out in the dark,
spot a monster, then switch to a weapon and shoot the hell out of where the
monster was.
I think overall, Doom 3 got a bad rap. The environment, though dark, is
extraordinarily detailed. Most of those complaining are probably the ones who
ramped up the gamma to foil the intended darkness of other games, and are
angry they can't do the same in this game.
There are a few parts which show Mars outdoors, and they look almost real.

Right. It's the monitor's fault that Doom3 is far darker than my
other games. 8/
I couldn't see shit on my old monitor.
Now with my new monitor I see everything.
You said you can't see.
Either you need glassess, or a new monitor ! =D
