Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive Comments?
Hello! Does anyone here use this external HDD? If so, then do you like it? It seems overall ratings and reviews on both Amazon and NewEgg are positive/decent, but I noticed some negative ones like getting refurbished ones when RMA'ed (also a pain in the butt to do) under its five years warranty, dying early, reformatting cause drive to fail... more »

Lower Cost Data Recovery Services
Can the regulars here recommend a reputable but lower cost hard drive recovery service in the US? Kroll probably does the best work, but their quote for an 80GB drive started at $600. For example, does [link] do a reasonable job for $169, if their Google ad is correct? Any other recommendations?... more »

Crashed Maxtor Drive - Ideas?
The 80GB Maxtor drive on my friend's XP SP3 computer crashed. There was a power flicker, and the power to the machine was interrupted. (It was at that point he learned that his UPS had died, or either it crashed at the same time since he regularly tests it.) 1. SpinRite doesn't get past 0%. It hangs at the beginning of the drive,... more »

ALWAYS close USB flash drive before removing?
Do I always need to close or stop a USB flash drive before I remove it? I'm using XP. In XP's Device Manager there is an entry for Disk Drives and when I look at the Policies tab for the flash drive, it says: "Optimized For Quick Removal. This setting enables write caching on the disk and in Windows, so you can... more »

So, my Personal Trainer's husband (who actually worked at IBM for about 20 years!) gave me a aptiva he owned as a birthday gift (i love retrocomputing...okay, calling '95 machines retrocomputers is kind-of pushing it), but he got rid of the hard drive a while ago. i can't seem to find out what model it is, but do most aptivas use the same... more »
