I should mention that he had a big blue ribbon taped to it when he
gave it to me. me and him were the only ones that got the visual pun
(Big Blue was, as you probably know, a nickname for IBM. a Big Blue
machine with a Big Blue ribbon).
Any IDE drive less than 120 GB should work. I think they came with
drives in the 8 GB range (at least that's what my neighbor's has).
Ah, IDE plug does appear to match. will i strictly need to be getting
a drive cage too? it doesn't appear that there's anywhere inside the
case to mount the drive...
Did your 'parents' all you that ?

It should be on the back near where the power cord plugs in.

Yep.

Yes, should be able to find something appropriate on ebay etc.
Aww, son-of-a! i only had enough money for the hard drive!
Sorry to double post, but the machine MIGHT have a drive cage in it.
it has something to hold the CD and floppy drives in...
As I recall, on hers the hard drive mounts on the same frame as the
floppy drive (underneath it). Look for some holes spaced the same
as hard drive screws.
Yes, as I recall the hard drive mounts to that same contraption.
It's been a while since I've had my neighbor's apart, but I seem
to recall it swinging out.

No problem.

It should go in there fine.
If you put the model number into the url above, it should tell you that detail in the service manual.
That's actually part of the problem -- I can't find the model number!
on my PS/2s you have that little emblem that says "IBM PS/2 P70 386"
or "IBM PS/2 l40SX".
(By the way, thanks for all the help, guys!)

There should be something like 3765 on the back near where the power cord plugs in.
There should also be a number on the mainboard inside too, tho that one isnt as easy to use.

No problem, thats what these technical newsgroups are for.
Once again, sorry about doublepost but, well, it's hard not to when
there isn't a edit button.
http://i33.tinypic.com/2diftkx.png - Probably should have mentioned
this little oddity before.

Thats the serial number.

See whats on the mainboard.

It seems that you have M/T 2137-e26. Try to find support with that.
With best regards,

Unfortunately, this site is unusable for older systems for months now...
I've just went to our service department to see whether they still have
old HMS manuals for those systems, but with no luck. :o(

Not as long as you use it appropriately.

Only if you drop it etc.
Installed windows 98, installed a better video driver (it defaulted to
640x480x16! Yuck!) and it runs like a charm. What seems odd is that it
has 128mb RAM and a AMD duron, yet says "Designed for Windows 95".
Apparently the old owner's been doing some tinkering around inside it!
I'll have to install windows 2000 at some point, i guess.

How did you decide its got a duron ? The 2137 could have the AMD K6.

Its more likely what is reporting the Duron is getting confused.
What does Everest say about the cpu ?

Don't get your expectations TOO high ... my neighbor's has been a solid,
reliable machine until I helped her retire it recently, but it is
definitely slow by current standards. She replaced it with a $200
Lenovo desktop machine based on the Atom processor (not especially known
for speed), and the difference is amazing.
