This timing seems/appears to be related to my earlier reboot (did not
power off) of this very old 2005's Debian box due its yesterday's Kernel
v2.6.32-5-686 upgrade (not version, just its package with fixes). I had
no problems with the reboot (but wasn't looking at its screen though).

I ran its detail reports before doing an extended self-test:

Device does not support Selective Self Tests/Logging

So I decided to run gsmartcontrol v5.41 (GUI version of smartctl) and it
also marked Power_On_Hours as a problem. I ran a long test and it
started with loud noises (a fan/motor or something spinning?) for about
30 seconds. That doesn't sound good to me. Anyways, here is the report
after the long test which said no errors/problems:

Don't worry. This means the drive manufacturer thinks it is about
time that you buy a new one, but otherwise the drive is fine.

This is a pure uptime count that expires when a pre-set
usage time is reached.

You can add '-i 9' to the smartd.conf entry for this device to suppress
future warning mails.

Smartd reported the failed attribute because VALUE <= THRESH:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME ... VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE ... WHEN_FAILED RAW...
...
.9 Power_On_Hours ... 001 001 001 Old_age FAILING_NOW 64880

Yes. Other attributes look good, even after 64880 hours (7+ years)
uptime :-)

Many recent drives return threshold 0 for Power_On_Hours and all other
usage ("Old_age") attributes which means that these would never "fail".

Nope, its an ancient drive which is still working fine.

Thats varied significantly world wide. Mine havent
even gone up 10% for some reason, 2TB samsungs
and the cheapest 3TB drives around.

Thats just a fancy way of saying that its a VERY old drive.

Havent seen a fireball in a FUCKING long time now.
All of that is it just saying those values have changed. No big deal.

I dont believe its significant.
Those are all fine.

May just be the power supply fan.

My Fujitsu 20GB HDD exceeded its POH threshold long ago. It still has
no reallocated or pending sectors.

Though the drive is apparently still good...
it does have a lot of hours on it.

I don't know what the flood in Thailand did ...but I just checked NewEgg
and you can get a new hard drive for about 100USD or so.

I'd consider replacing it...but I don't think you have to rush.

OTOH: As long as all your data are backed up
and you keep it backed up. no need to worry

It is usually the belief that prices will rise and the rush to buy
that pushes the price up, not the actual shortage.

This happened with rice prices in 2008.

Yes, but those same hard drives you see for $100 were just $59 weeks ago.

Can you blame the multinational corporations for gouging consumers
on the artificially inflated prices when they have management bonuses
and stockholder dividends to pay?

Remember, it is not the material and manufacturing costs which affect
so much the final price, but what the market will bear -- ie what
walk-in traffic will pay for convenience because they "want it now".

Yes and I checked places like Geeks.com and the prices were up there as
wekk in the bargain paradise.

Until the hard drive it is backed up to starts burping.
Waah! I need another terabyte drive to back up my terabyte
drive.

Actually it is the result of the flooding of Thailand as far
as I know. The prices are up because the dealers want to make as
much as the customer will pay. And it may be a while until the
Thai operations are up and making the stuff again.

You are missing the point entirely -- the disks in the stores were
bought at a price and already in the stores and being sold at a price before
the flooding occurred.

The sellers are now charging more for the disks that they had already
bought and so are artificially inflating the prices.

OK. I just got another e-mail about it this morning. I assume it will
keep doing that daily until I stop using that old school IDE/PATA HDD.
:( So, I will tell it to stop telling me about it then. Do I just add
"/dev/sdb -i 9" line (without quotation marks) to the bottom of my
/etc/smartd.conf file? I am not sure if that is correct or not. :)

Hmm, I thought Thailand's flood made prices for HDDs go up due to
shortages.

Yeah, I do back up. It is actually my storage drive. Heh.

How old is yours? I have had other Quantum HDDs in the past, and dang
these are reliable for old ages to me. I used to have a Fireball EX 6.4
GB many years ago that last about a decade, but it got hosed by a
motherboard or PSU burnout. I didn't bother to recover it. My friend
think its cirucit board got hosed from that burnout. :(

The "-i 9" option must be added to the already existing "/dev/sdb"
configuration line. If it doesn't exist and DEVICESCAN is used instead,
you could use "DEVICESCAN [...other options...] -i 9". This disables the
warning for all drives. See "man smartd.conf" for details.
