Static IP outside of router DHCP range
There is a comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.netwo rking newsgroup that would've been a more appropriate group to post in. But anyway, you'll know better next time. ...Yeah, it's something called by the oxymoronic name of Static DHCP ("/Static Dynamic/ Host Configuration Protocol"). Basically it's a way to have a specific client or clients get assigned the same IP address... more »

unable to connect to router wifi network?
Hi, I have 4 pc's at home, all on the same home network, all from the same router (Belking G+Mimo). All pc's are using Win XP Home. My two desktop pcs work fine via hardwired ethernet connections to the router. They can connect to other pcs on the network and to the net. My netbook (Asus Eeepc 1000HE) also works fine via the wireless part of... more »

Win XP's Universal Plug and Play Device Host service starts and then stops immediately
It's the wierdest thing, I noticed today that my UPNPhost service is no longer working on two of my XP machines. I noticed it on my desktop first, so I went to my laptop to compare, and found out that it's not working there either! I've checked through a number of webpages and none of them have had the solution for me yet.... more »

Gigabit ethernet switches?
I recently got myself a home gigabit ethernet switch from Netgear, GS605. It's okay, but after awhile it seems to overheat and drop back down to 100Mbps speeds. I fix it by unplugging its power for about 10 minutes, and it's back to normal. Anybody else experiencing these problems with this or other gigabit switches or routers?... more »

Looking for a Recommendation: Wireless and Hardwire Router w/Extras?
Hi, I picked 2 seemingly general networking groups to try this question in, please forgive me if I've chosen poorly :) I have a home network setup that has been working for many years. Originally, my Netopia R9000 (I believe that's the model ... I'd check but it's pretty burried) did all the hardwire work I needed. Even better, it... more »

Network card not recognized by machine.
Motherboard: PCChips M810LR version 5.0 (from 2002) - PCI 2.2 +5V slots. Network Card: Intel PRO/1000 GT - PCI 2.3 "universal" (both +3.3v and +5V). Card doesn't work nor is even recognized by the computer. When an ethernet cable is plugged in, the appropriate link speed is displayed on the upper LED and the link LED (lower) is steady. The link LED does NOT blink with... more »

PIR interfering with wireless network
We have a wireless network at work which appears to have gone downhill since the workmen installed PIRs for the burglar alarm. One of them in particular appears to cause dropped packets the closer a laptop is to it. Is this possible?? It's not a wireless PIR as far as I know, as I can see some leftover cable he was using which is a multicore (about 10 cores) type similar to phone systems, so I assume this is for the signal aswell as power. The person in that office swears blind that there were absolutely no problems until the PIR was installed above her desk, and now when I check, about 60% of the packets are being dropped. Moving her laptop to the opposite side of the room it drops only 5% of packets. PIRs used to just pick up infrared of your bodyheat, but I think now they are also motion sensors? Perhaps this means they are sending out a signal and bouncing it off you? Perhaps this could interfere with wireless networking?... more »

Secure Shell (SSH) & VPN's For Windows XP & Vista (Resellers Wanted)
Why be stuck with the ip address from your local internet service provider? We understand that there are times you wish to remain anonymous, need a country specific ip address for gaming or more security. Did you know that your local internet service provider offers you no security while you are online? Thats right, absolutely... more »
