Hi,
I just recently purchased a Dlink 2.4G AirPlus Pro wireless
networking system for my Compaq Presario 1800T laptop which is about
1 1/2 years old, Jan 2001.
Everything works fine, except when it is transmitting data, there
is a fairly annoying static sound through the speakers in my laptop.
It is very annoying and as you can guess am very dissapointed,
spending $2800.00 on a laptop which is unusable the way I intended it.
I tried the Dlink DWL-650, DWL-650+ and a Lynksys card also.
Both the DWL-650 and Lynksys card have the noise, but it is not as
loud as the DWL-650+ card. The 650+ card is EXTREMELY loud and
unusable.
Muting the windows audio does not effect the noise. It can be
quieted only by disabling the sound card in system properties.
I also want to add that my friend has a Dell laptop and we tried all 3
cards in his, and there was absolutely no problem with his machine.
I called Compaq tech support and as you would guess, they did not
give me any satisfaction reguarding trying to fix the problem. There
take on it is "that the laptop was not madebefore wireless was a
consideration". I'm not sure that I agree, BUT this was one of the
reasons I bought the laptop in the first place, to go soley wireless
when available.
I am thinking that the noise is coming from RF interference
getting into the mainboard, possibly from improper shielding?
Has anyone heard of this or experienced this type of thing??
Any suggestions as to how to handle Compaq OR even shielding??
Does anyone have a feel for if the 5G wireless networking would be
better or worse in a situation??
I am looking for any ideas on any angle possible.

Any ideas would truly be appreciated
Thanks,
George

I used to own a Compaq 1200-XL119 that had the exact same problem. This
was a 500 MHz AMD K6-2 running Windows ME. I used to use the DWL-650 on
this machine, and I would hear the static through the speakers only during
transmit and receive on the wireless card. It was not very loud, and it
was most definitely a shielding issue. I did not find it very annoying,
but other may have a problem.

I dumped the machine about a year ago, and I have used the D-Link card in
both my Toshiba 3000-S353 and my Compaq 725US laptops, and I do not get
the same static noise. The shielding on these laptops must be much
better.

You are out of luck. They do not guarantee anything related to
interference. If it really bothers you, you may want to sell the machine
on the open market and get one that does not have the issue.

I have no suggestions about shielding. One other solution would be to try
a USB wireless adapter (DWL-520). This would get the transmitter away
from the speakers and the main board. You could even try a long USB cord.
I would be surprised if this does not work.
