Does sit flat (horizontally) on a desk or shelf, or does it stand
on edge to maximize convective cooling?

It sits flat. There's so many cables hanging off of it that it topples
over if I try it standing up.

Staples sells a wire mail holder/manila folder holder that costs
between $6 and $7. You router could fit in one of the slots just
as the holder is or after you've cut out one of the wire loops.
That would hold the router vertical. I use just such a wire holder
to suspend my cable modem over my router. Sitting on its back
with the largest loop down, the holder surrounds the router which
sits on the desk inside the wire loop. Sitting on top of the smallest
wire loop (which has a perforated sheet metal center) is the modem -
which is kept cool by its suspension with convective air passing over
all sides. It's cheap, very effective, shrinks the "footprint", and it
looks good (or so I think).
I can't find it on the Staples.com website, but your local store
might have it. I think it's made by SteelMaster, and it's probably
called a "desk organizer".

Regardless, I've had other devices like routers which have stood tall
before. They also overheated in their own ways, whether standing or
lying.

Ya gotta stop breathing on those things, Khan!
