LPC quad UART garbling 8th bit in TX data - difficult to reproduce - any ideas?
Dear Everyone, apologies for cross-posting, I'm wondering if some of the veterans of 10-15 years ago are still reading these USENET groups... I'm sending this problem description just in case the weird symptoms ring a bell with someone - if someone happens to have a past experience that might resemble my symptoms.... more »

ThinkPad 2656E2G: failing number keys 1-2-3-4-7-8-9-0-
Hi, all of a sudden, as always, the number keys 1 through 0 except 5 and 6 fail on a thinkpad 2656 E2G. The shift-function also fails. Is this a common issue? Any DIY-help and remedy (experience with hardware is given) advisable? Hardware or maybe malware (hardly imagineable on that machine, but...)... more »

best socket 775 Intel cpu?
I just got in on a great deal on 2 Biostar Motherboards: [link] using the coupon code, I was able to get 2 for $30 shipped. I haven't purchased an Intel processor since about 1994, and I imagine a lot has changed since then. A cursory search showed me a lot... more »

Do we really need optical drives any more?
I was thinking about my 16GB USB flash drive today, and thinking about how it holds almost 4 times what a DVD +R disk holds. Then I thought about how it can be erased and rewritten any number of times, and how it didn't require me to buy a separate drive to use it. If I wanted to buy a DVD burner, I'd pay something like $38-$40 to be... more »

Upgraded to Windows 7 - now I can't print anything!
I have a Samsung ML-1740 Laser Printer. It hooks up using a parallel printer port. When I upgraded my motherboard about 15 months ago, I bought one that didn't have a parallel port built in. I had to decide whether to buy a new USB printer, an adapter cable, or just get a PCI Parallel port card. The last solution was also the cheapest, so I got a... more »
