Any suggestions on troubleshooting? I've already opened the thing up
and checked the IDE cable. I have the I/O magic CD-RW on the secondary
IDE and the original CD-ROM as the master. They WERE both set to cable
select, and I tried moving the jumpers to hardwire the master/slave
settings to no effect.
Oh, the way the cable is set up is
IDEport -> I/O magic Burner -> CD-ROM
(end of wire) (middle of wire) (end of wire)
Both CDs READ without any problems. They WERE set to cable select, but
now I have the CD-ROM as the master and the burner as a slave.
Considering the age of the burner, it most likely reached its end - the
write laser died. Try first squirt canned air to blow away dust from the
laser/lens. If that doesn't work, try the lens cleaning disc. If those
don't work, open up the drive and try cleaning the laser with lens
cleaner or cotton swap and rubbing alcohol.

Why in the heck would you suggest useing rubbing alchohol on a plastic
lense? You never use alcohol on plastic unless you want to degrade and cloud
the lens all to hell.

Years ago that's what's always suggested.
(groups.google now searches only Web pages!)
Forum moderator suggests 100% alcohol:

Because none of the beta testers were using a POS ide reader like you
were???? As far as i could tell we basically all had either Plextors or
scsi based readers and/or burners that didnt show this behavior.

I never in all my testing received that slow of DAE
in any of the betas i tested.
i have been using a Panasonic 24x scsi drive

EZ creator 4 tests show my CDr508 scsi drive at .9x for DAE.
(Panasonic CR-508 24x SCSI does DAE @ 8x)

(Do you remember Pearl Harbor?)
How old is too old? Do you have a cutoff date in mind?
Is this recent enough?

How did you conclude 8x-16x is the optimal, Mikey? By measuring the
error rates, I presume -- when you don't even know what C1 error is?

Don't be surprised - just select burner and media appropriately.
I have waiting in the outgoing mail two copies of a master for
pressing. One is on T-Y, the other Mitsui. Both were recorded
at 8x on a Plexwriter 1210s.
Each was tested and found free of C1 and C2 errors.

The above is an unadulterated white LIE.
There will always be some C1 errors. They say C1 errors are built into
the CD. There is no CD with zero C1 errors.
