Here's hoping they - finally - managed to match the screen resolution of
the target devices.

Tooltips? More like, "great black boxes that hover over and obscure the
whole friggin' screen, making it bloody well impossible to proceed at
all."

And it's nothing like a "tutorial." A tutorial takes the newbie player
through a scripted, simplified set of instructional scenarios. A proper
tutorial would be like the one for DEFCON - a nifty slate of simple
scenarios that deal with a single topic; placing units, scouting,
submarines, etc.

This is ridiculous. I'm already sorry I bought it.

I think I'll probably chalk it up in the "lessons learned" column -
don't buy dopey card games - and go back to FLIGHT COMMANDER 2.

What wargames are consensus good picks on this thing?

Consensus ? In here ? You must be new :)

Civil War : 1863
Combat Mission - Touch
Battle Academy

There's a whole brigade of wargames in various stages of production,
including Panzer Corps and Field of Glory - watch this space for
news :)

Second this.

ASSAULT COMMANDER: ULTIMATE is, IMO, a pretty decent wargame, and with a
price of $0.00, it's a no-brainer to see if it's to your liking. Kinda
generic ... but $0.00? That's a hard argument to best.

Also, I'd add that Sid Meier's PIRATES (while not a "wargame" in our
sense...) is just awesome on the iPad. I got massive gameplay out of
this proven title, updated for the iPad, and it plays *amazingly* on a
tablet. Interface, gameplay, graphics, and general fun. (Though I suck
at "dancing," I'm pretty good at sea once I have a 32-gun brig under
me...). Best $3.99 I ever spent on an iPad app.

[Ignore the fucktard reviews saying it "crashes." It doesn't. At
least, not in my experience on a gen3 iPad. Never seen a single
problem. Not one. Not in about 80+ hours of fun. Played through a
half-dozen careers now.]

What I've found out so far:

Weapons can have two deployment modes, High and Low. Look at the weapon and
you will se a H or L (or both) on the weapon, indicating what altitude it
can be relased at.

During airplane movement/placement phase, double-click on your plane to
swap between Low or High altitude (it says L/H in the corner).

Your goal is to get to the center of the "map" and destoy the target.
The target is the card there, not any counters on it (unless it is a
specific target card which says "destroy all center units").

Your pilot has a stress level, which affects his combat abilities. It
goes up if he is fired upon (I'm not sure if it goes up more if you evade
or not, haven't read the rules that closely yet).

The 1965 missions at least have no enemy aircraft or SAMs, just AAA
and ground troops firing.

The first 5-6 games was like you, no clue what I was doing, then I bothered
to read the first couple of pages of the rules which shows what the
various numbers on the tokens and cards means, and I got wiser.

Now I understand a bit more about the game and am getting some enjoyment
out of it. Pretty sure I'll get more once I figure out better tactics
for attacking and such.

Thanks, all. I have fond memories of the original Pirates, might check
out the remake on the iPad, never played the PC remake from a few years
back.

If you don't get sufficient fun outta PIRATES on the iPad, I'll send you
a money order for $4.00.

You stand to gain a whole penny.

I'll differ. <g> Not to pirates etc, there are a number of really fun
games on the ipad/iphone and it sounds like that might be one of them,
but as to wargames: there's not a single good wargame. Nothing I'd even
look twice at on a PC.

I look at things a bit differently, given the price gap between an app
and a PC title.

ASSAULT COMMANDER, for example, isn't awesome, but for *zero* money, if
I get three hours of entertainment outta the thing, it's worth it. If
not, then I'm not out anything except for three hours.

It's the way I look at a RedBox movie rental; a film I would have panned
vehemently had I spend $30 for myself and Mrs. G., I can just go "meh"
about if I dislike it for $1.28. Sixty cents per hour?

Call it Giftzwerg's law of ANGRY BIRDS.

Possibly, but once I'm getting up to paying $15 (like with phantom
whatever it's called) that's half a real game. That's too much to pay
for a taste. For me any way.

True enough. When I say "app price," I'm talking $3-$4. Once we get
into $15 for PHANTOM LEADER, we're edging into "PC pricing."

I know I've said it before, but I think developers are shooting
themselves in the foot by pricing their wares at the higher end of the
market spectrum. I hemmed and hawed about PHANTOM LEADER for a week
before saying, "Ah, fuck it."

For $2.99, I'd have bought it - no-brainer - the moment it was released.
