I know that this can be a loaded question but . . .

Which are the best games in the following categories

1.) Air warfare

2.) Naval warfare

3.) Grand Strategy army game.

4.) Tactical level army game.

5.) Which wargame is most actively played over the Net against other wargamers.

As far as flight sims go,currently probably one of the IL2 games.Or
perhaps one of the Microsoft Combat Sim versions.Strategic
games, probably Bombing the Reich or maybe the upcoming Down in
Flames,which is a boardgame port.

Who knows,but I'm looking forward to Koger's Russo/Japanese game.

Not a lot of choices, but I like Strategic Command, released by
Battlefront.SC2 is coming in the near future.

There's really no contest for tactical level WW2 combat--the various
Combat Mission games are far ahead of any competition.

Who knows? My guess would be the various Combat Mission games. The email
play is great, and the TCP is maybe even better.

Really ? :)

Managing it (Battle of Britain) or flight simulator (IL-2 Sturmovik)

Anxiously awaiting Norm Koger's Russo-Japanese war ...

Strategic Command (watch out for World at War and Strategic Command 2)
A certain "HR" individual is going to come in here and say that Third
Reich is the best ever made, but that's just to trap you into playing
3R with him :)
All joking aside 3R is excellent, but only vs. a human player.

Combat Mission, if you're looking for a company/battalion/regiment
level game : Highway to the Reich.

> 5.) Which wargame is most actively played over the Net against other wargamers.

Probably the Steel Panthers games, TOAW comes to mind too as does
Strategic Command.

Unlike Strategic Command? ;)

Second Giftwerg's suggestion of Harpoon on both items. If you meant airsim,
I have to go with Wings, if just for the pure joy of playing it.

> 3.) Grand Strategy army game.

Europa Universalis II. Personally, I much prefer Victoria - an Empire under
the Sun, but I'm in minority. If PvP is an option, then Third Reich PC.

If historical realism is not a strict requirement, then Rome: Total War.
However, neither the strategical nor tactical view are excellent on its own,
rather it's the combination. If Pvp is an option, then Diplomacy.

Combat Mission, most likely.

No idea, but I know there's a _huge_ Diplomacy fan base.

You could give Gary Grigsby's old monster PacWar a try, it has air,
naval and ground aspects, but it's more of an operational level game.
Matrix has it at:

http://www.matrixgames.com/games/pacificwar/

While you're at the Matrix site you might want to look at War in the
Pacific (http://www.warinthepacific.net/main.asp) if PacWar interests
you (personally both are beyond my tolerance level <g>), but since
PacWar is free I think, it might be worth a shot. War in the Pacific
on the other hand requires you to take out a second mortg . . . never
mind <g>

Also for a great modern day tactical game check out TacOps 4, located
at:

http://www.battlefront.com/index.htm

There's plenty of other wargames at the Battlefront site as well. Also
consider stopping by:

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/

They also publish some fine games. Another game worth looking at is
Peoples Tactics at:

http://www.peoplestactics.com/

Not only is it free, but it's a damn fine wargame.

I think they've pretty much moved on to D3. Try
www.starfleetuniverse.com or www.dynaverse.net.

YMMV. I didn't like SC3 all that much, so I more or less faded from
the scene after Taldren started up D3. I'd hope that somebody was still
running D2, though.

LOL - you're right of course - but I would argue that SC has a very good
tactical AI and a not too bad strategic AI where the AI in 3R is mediocre
overall

Or Close Combat.

For ultra tactical, Full Spectrum Warrior is pretty good, but some people
may find manouvering just one squad a bit limiting and it doesn't support
British Army doctrine of the decisive bayonet charge! (after suitable
suppressive fire of course).

Cheers
