I won't comment on the game itself since I'm still under NDA (yup). But I
can comment on the "always online to play even in sinle player!" DRM.

What an happy tale!

"Happy" because D3 was *the* game under the spotlights, and thus the same
spotlights showed the GARGANTUAN DEBACLE that followed the launch.
Basically, the server were overhelmed, and people couldn't play the game.
After two days some still can't.

But there is more. The buyers are slowly realizing how "you must be always
connected to internet to play" means that "you must be always connected to
internet to play". No, really: no D3 while you are camping; no D3 on your
laptop while you drive; no D3 on the International Space Station. And so on.

Of course I fully expect that Blizzard will expand the server capacity, and
in a few days these problems will be solved. This is not the point. The
point is that the most expected game of the last 11 years made painfully
clear, all around the world and to billions of people at the same, what "you
must be always connected to internet to play" really means.

Will they learn? My opinion: when hell freezes over.

Yeah, our morning meeting was interrupted this AM by one of my
assistants who was livid about this. My first thought was exactly the
above ...

... but this guy *is* "always connected to the internet." Phones,
desktops, laptops, iPads - the guy might as well have a CAT6 cable up
his ass. "Of course I'm connected to the internet at all times - isn't
*everyone*!?!?"

He's right. Even an old fogey like myself is, "always connected to the
internet."

Blizzard's mistake was the obvious one; you *overestimate* capacity
needed until such time as you have real-world usage data. If that means
you need to run for a contract cycle with 10x the capacity ... fine.
The alternative is exactly what you describe; millions of users ripshit
and these dumbheads.

The first, and rather to the point review is already in :)

Despite the Dutch URL, It's in English, so no fear :)

Best game-related video since Angry German Kid.

Instant. Mailbombing. Prize.

I'm amazed that we didn't get the Hitler parody yet.

Do the ISS astronauts really have such problems?! Could they only write

In fact, *they* want more than just being online while playing, they
want a continuous log-in to a given website. This alone should not
represent a problem, but if they impose data transfer, and I mean large
donwloads and uploads, then they ought to learn from some MMO providers
with many millions of customers who run the business practically without
connection problems... I understand all the developer concerns about
protecting the game, also wishing to recommend those comments by author
"David Buckley" (venturebeat article). *They* want to ensure that pirate
copies become useless ;-) and the online constraint represents a burden
to honest gamers. Any better way to get out of the hell?! ;-)

What amazes me is how many people take these videos for real. Like "Angry
German Kid" (made by that little genius after the German press blamed
videogames for a killing spree); or "OMG HUSKY!! U R TEH BOMBZORS" (*), the
parody of all those "I'm an internet giiiiiiiiiirl for the nerds!" dire web
personalities.

"Scares" because, it doesn't matter how well those parodies are done, they
do not portray *A* Blizzard nerd but *THE* Blizzard nerd. This alone should
give it away (along with all the almost sublimininal nuances). Thus, I
wonder how many of the "scoffers" think that it is for real because they
actually can relate to the character, either through themselves or someone
close to them O___o

But - like all truly great comedy - there's a firm basis in truth here.

"ERROR 37" is so right-on apt and deadly accurate because *we've all
seen this*! From the first time we saw a dialog that read:

ERROR 37
Files Lost.
[OK?}

... and we've always cried out for the button entitled, "NO! IT'S *NOT*
OK! NOT AT ALL!"

Might be bad sampling but both guys I know who are playing Diabolo III
can walk into a biker bar without anyone raising an eyebrow.

Sure, there are some nerds out there, but even in our IT department,
their natural habitat, there's only 1 or 2 guys I'd classify as nerds.
It's a stereotype, but I think very few people actually are real
nerds.

I hope that those with even a faint interest in DRM are following this
tragedy. Not only the servers are still problematic, but maybe they were
even hacked. A lot of gamers report that they characters (stored on the
servers), are either missing or stripped by all the items. Others, it seems,
found that their account was "sold". But, according to other rumors, hackers
weren't involved at all: the servers did it all by themselves.

I asked a Guest code to a friend (basically you download the whole game but
only the first Act is unlockled, like a demo) - mostly because I worked on
the Italian translation and I wanted to see my work in context (always
useful). On Saturday and *Sunday* (!) I wasn't able to play. Then I played a
bit. Today I got three disconnections in three minutes of gaming.

And now I understand a little better that parody...

.... and people wonder why I quit playing mass market pc games years
ago.

The only problem I'll be having with my tabletop game tonight is that
the beer in the fridge is out of arm's reach.

Seriously, why do people put up with this crap ? Me, I'd get so
annoyed with it that game would disappear out of the window in .3
milliseconds followed by a review so scathing and vitriolic it burned
holes in the designer's flatscreen.

Do those reviews anyway, Eddy, as a public service and maybe the fuckers will STOP with the "online only" bullshit crap.
